PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Hampton University softball team completed a three-game sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday with a 7-2 win at Hawk Field.
The Lady Pirates (24-21, 11-1 MEAC) have won 13 of their 16 games overall and six straight.
Hampton opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning, beginning when junior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) scored after freshman
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) reached on an error. Freshman
Bobbi Langlois (Medina, Ohio) doubled home McCoy to put Hampton up 2-0.
Wilkins singled home a run in the top of the second, before sophomore
Bianca Vallejo (Chandller, Ariz.) singled home Wilkins later in the inning to give the Lady Pirates a 4-0 lead.
Senior
Shine Huwe (Green Bay, Wisc.) hit her third home run of the season in the third, a two-run shot that gave the Lady Pirates a 6-0 lead. UMES answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, cutting that lead to 6-2.
McCoy drove in a run with a single up the middle in the fourth, putting Hampton up 7-2.
Huwe led the Lady Pirates with two hits on the afternoon, driving in a team-high two runs. Both Huwe and Wilkins scored twice.
Sophomore
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up her 18th win of the season after pitching three innings and striking out two. Langlois also pitched four innings, giving up just one hit.
