Hampton Men’s Basketball Begins Four-Game Road Trip Against Bowling Green

HAMPTON, Va. (Dec. 18, 2023) … Hampton University Men's Basketball team returns to the road facing Bowling Green. The Pirate's trip to the Stroh Center marks the beginning of a four-game away stint. While Coach Joyner Jr.'s squad has faced the Falcons twice, they have never been inside the Stroh Center. Tuesday's game is set to begin at 11:00 AM on ESPN+.

A Look at Your Pirates

Hampton in their last time out fell to No. 20 James Madison 88-71 inside the Convocation Center. It had been 25 years since the Pirates had hosted a nationally ranked-opponent. After holding one of the nation's best offenses to 41 points, HU led by one at the half. Jerry Deng once again produced another stellar performance. The freshman had a game-high 18 points on 7-11 shooting from the field. 

Tuesday's contest will be the third-ever meeting between the Pirates and the Falcons. The series first meeting happened at the GoPrint.com Legends Classic. HU narrowly fell to Bowling Green 81-79. BGSU was able to escape with a victory on a last-second shot inside the paint. In the series most recent history, the Bowling Green defeated the Pirates inside the Convocation Center 86-72.

So far this season HU has had one of the top offenses in the Coastal Athletic Association averaging 83.1 points per game. Tedrick Wilcox Jr. through ten games is producing a team-high 15.6 points per game. The Pawtucket, R.I. native, has led the Pirates in made threes this season with 22. Sophomore Kyrese Mullen is close behind Wilcox Jr. averaging 15.3 points per game. Mullen's averages are up across the board from his freshman campaign.

A Look at the Falcons

Bowling Green enters the contest with a (7-3) overall record. The Falcons began the 2023-24 season with wins over Chicago State and Arkansas State. After dropping three straight games BGSU has been on a tear. An 82-61 win over Lipscomb has sparked a five-game winning streak for the Falcons. Inside the Stroh Center Bowling Green has only lost one contest. 

Head Coach Todd Simon enters his first season under the helm. Prior to Bowling Green Simon spent seven seasons at Southern Utah. With the Thunderbirds, Simon produced three consecutive 20-win plus seasons. During his time with Southern Utah, he would bring the program its first Big Sky Championship regular season title.

The Falcons have one of the nation's top scorers in Marcus Hill. Hill through ten games is producing 20.3 points per game which is the 21st most in the country. The Rockford, Ill. native, currently sits second in the MAC for total points. BGSU's second scoring option this season has been senior Jason Spurgin. Spurgin has been a threat inside the paint and from beyond the arc hitting 11 threes.
