Box Score HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 11, 2024) … William & Mary (7-9, 2-1) stormed back from a one-point halftime deficit to defeat Hampton (4-12, 0-4) 73-61. Trailing 32-31 at intermission, the Tribe erupted to outscore the Pirates, 42-29 in the second stanza.
William & Mary jumped to a quick 10-3 lead propelled by a pair of three pointers. But Hampton responded by reeling off nine straight points to take a 12-10 lead on a
Joshua Lusane field goal. Hampton limited the Tribe to 1-for-12 shooting from the field over a 5:52 span.
The Pirates built six point leads twice in the first half only to see the Tribe battle back. Hampton went on a 6-0 run to lead 32-26 late in the first half. But William & Mary scored the final five points of the half to close to 32-31.
Jordan Nesbitt tallied 12 first half points and
Kyrese Mullen added 11 for the Pirates.
An 8-0 spurt by the Tribe early in the second half put the Tribe up 39-33 with 17:13 left. A trey by Mullen momentarily stopped the Tribe momentum but William & Mary made six of its next eight shots to go ahead 56-46. Hampton closed the gap to within five points, 60-55, on a free throw by Mullen but could get no closer. Hampton went 5:16 without a field goal in the game's final minutes as William & Mary outscored the Pirates 13-6 in the final 5:30 of play.
Mullen led all scorers with 22 points with nine rebounds and Nesbitt added 15 points with nine boards for the Pirates. Five Tribe players reached double-figures including Chase Lowe (15), Trey Moss (12), Charlie Williams (11), Matteus Case (11), and Caleb Dorsey (10).
William & Mary outrebounded the Pirates by a 45-32 margin. In addition, the Tribe grabbed 17 offensive boards turning them into 17 second-chance points while sending Hampton to its seventh consecutive loss.
The Pirates host North Carolina A&T on Martin Luther King Day, January 15, in a game nationally televised on CBS Sports at the Hampton Convocation Center.
