Pirates Host Elon for First Time in Program History

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 26, 2024) … Since joining the Coastal Athletic Association, the Pirates have only faced the Phoenix once in program history. Saturday's conference matchup marks the first time Elon has made the trip to the Convocation Center. In last season's contest between the two teams, the Phoenix narrowly defeated Hampton 70-68. 

A Look at the Pirates

Hampton is coming off a 107-86 loss to Charleston inside the Convocation Center. The Cougar's 107 points are a season-high for points allowed for HU.  While Charleston dominated offensive glass in the first half, the Pirates were able to crash the boards in the second half. Kyrese Mullen was on fire scoring a career-high 32 points. The Norfolk Va. native, also went 6-8 from beyond the arc setting a new career-high for made threes.

Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad in their recent outings have found their rhythm from beyond the arc. In their last five games, the Pirates have 48 threes while shooting 39 percent. While HU is averaging a league-high in turnovers (13.4), Hampton had a season-low six turnovers against Charleston. Throughout the 2023-24 campaign, the Pirates have defended the three well holding opponents to 32 percent from beyond the arc.

  • 32: Kyrese Mullen became the second Pirate this season to have a 30-point-plus performance

A Look at the Phoenix

Elon enters Saturday's game with an 8-12 overall record and is 1-6 in conference play. The Phoenix defeated North Carolina A&T 77-59 for the first CAA win. Since then EU has dropped five straight games. Elon is coached by Billy Taylor who enters his second season with the program. In year two, Taylor has matched Elon's win total from last season.

The Phoenix are one of the better three-point shooting teams in the conference. So far this season, EU on averaging is shooting 36.4 percent from beyond the arc. Max Mackinnon, Zac Ervin, and Nick Dorn all have made a team-high 34 threes this season. Mackinnon is Coach Taylor's top offensive threat shooting 46 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc.
