Pirates Face Early Road Test Against George Washington

HAMPTON, Va. (Nov. 6, 2024) … The Pirates hit the road for the first time this season facing Atlantic-10 foe George Washington. Since Hampton has become a Division I program, the Pirates are 2-2 all-time against the Revolutionaries. Friday's contest will be streamed on ESPN+ and is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.

While these two teams have not faced each other since the 2020-21 season, the last meeting went down to the wire. With the Pirates going on an 8-2 run late in the game Hampton emerged victorious. Hampton was able to do most of its damage from inside the paint and at the free-throw line. George Washington hit a buzzer-beater layup to make it 82-78.

Since the last meeting, both programs have had new head coaches take over the reins. Hampton is year one of the Ivan Thomas era while George Washington's Chris Caputo in his third season at the helm. The Pirates and the Revolutionaries won their season opener in front of the home crowd.

Coach Ivan Thomas's side defeated Mid-Atlantic Christian 110-53. Hampton shot 48.7 percent from the field while only committing five turnovers. In the second half, the Pirates were on fire from three going 7-14 from beyond the arc. HU was only two three-pointers away from tying last season's team high. Kyrese Mullen, Daniel Johnson, George Beale Jr., Noah Farrakhan, Wayne Bristol Jr., and Trevor Smith all finished in double-figures. Mullen recorded his first double-double of the 2024-25 campaign. The Norfolk, Va. native finished the night with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He is currently one of four players in the Coastal Athletic to record a double-double on opening night.

Freshman Daniel Johnson had a solid collegiate debut for the Pirates. The Chicago, Ill. native, produced a contest-high 19 points while going 8-15 from the field. Johnson also went 3-6 from three while chipping in with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. The 6-7 guard played prep ball at the prestigious Brewster Academy. The Academy's notable alumni include All-NBA superstar Donovan Mitchell, TJ Warren, Will Barton, and Devonte Graham.

George Washington opened the 2024-25 campaign against Mercyhurst and won 76-59. Heading into the half it was tied 29-29. The Revolutionaries shot an improved 57 percent and 33 percent from three in the second half to coast to the win. Coach Caputo's side played stingy defense the whole contest holding the Lakers to 37 percent shooting from the field.

Both Darren Buchanan Jr. and Rafael Castro both recorded double-doubles in the season-opening contest.  Buchanan Jr. last season was an A-10 All-Rookie selection averaging 15.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg, and shot 54.6 from the field. Against the Lakers, Washington, D.C. finished the game with a team-high 19 points.
