HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 19, 2024) – The Hampton's men's lacrosse team is preparing to host its first game of the 2024 season. The Pirates will battle against the VMI Keydets on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 4:00 PM inside of Armstrong Stadium.
The two teams have faced each other a total of seven times over the last eight years. The Keydets have won all of the previous matches, most recently on Feb. 21, 2023, in Lexington, Va. (20-10).
Last Game
This past Saturday, the Pirates lost to Lafayette by a score of 22-2.
Darius Stanley and
Sebastian West both scored their first goals of the season.
David Sadasivam finished the game with 16 saves while defenseman
Dillon Bethea led the Pirates in caused turnovers with two, and ground balls with three.
So Far This Season
Overall, senior Ellison Burt Murray leads the Pirates with three goals. Four others each have one. Bethea continues to have the most ground balls with eight. Three Pirates have four ground balls this season. Sadasivam posted a season-high 16 saves against Lafayette to bring his total to 19.
Hampton has the second-best penalty kill percentage in the CAA at 84.6 percent.
Scouting the VMI Keydets (1-2)
The Keydets are coached by James Purpura in his fourth year with the program. He has increased the Keydets win total in every season. VMI defeated Queens (N.C.) 14-10, and has suffered losses against Cleveland State and High Point.
Simon Moore has tallied six goals for the Keydets this season. Exactly 50 percent of their goals have been assisted. Jack Rogers leads the team in ground balls with 18. The Keydets goalie, Adam Norris has recorded 34 saves this spring.
