Hampton Men’s Basketball Begins Post-Season Play Against Elon

HAMPTON, Va. (March 7, 2024) … The Hampton University men's basketball team is set to begin post-season play at the 2024 Jersey Mike's CAA Men's Basketball Championship. With the Pirate's loss to the Tribe this past weekend, HU enters the tournament as the 14 seed facing Elon in the opening round. Hampton has already faced the Phoenix once this season but fell at home in a close contest 80-74. The winner of Friday's game will advance to the next round and face Delaware. Tournament Information 

A Look at Your Pirates

In its last time out, Hampton lost on the road to William & Mary 85-73. The Pirates gave up a season-high 15 threes to the Tribe. However, heading into the tournament HU has won three out of its five games. Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad picked up wins over Towson, Campbell, and Monmouth. During this Ja'Von Benson has been crucial to the Pirate's success. The Columbia, S.C. native, is averaging 12 points per game and 10.6 rebounds through the last five games.

Throughout the season the Pirates have defended the three well. HU on average is holding opponents to 32 percent from beyond the arc which is the third-best in the CAA. Hampton has become one of the better shot-blocking teams in the conference. Heading into the final month of the regular season the Pirates ranked 10th in the league. Heading into the CAA Tournament, HU is producing the third-most blocks per game (3.6).

A Look at the Phoenix

Heading into the tournament, Elon enters as the 11 seed with a 13-18 overall record and went 6-12 in league play. In their last time out the Phoenix fell at home to Monmouth 85-70. The Hawk's win over EU would only be their second road win of the season. Elon is coached by Billy Taylor who is closing out his second season with the program. 

Coach Taylor's squad has one of the better freshmen in the conference with guard Nick Dorn. In his first season with the team, Dorn averaged 9.5 points per game and 3.1 rebounds. The Phoenix had the third-best offense in the conference this season (76.5). EU's top scoring threat this season was TK Simpkins who averaged 13.7 points per contest. Simpkins in his last time out had his first 30-point performance of the season.
