HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 1, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team resumes Coastal Athletic Association play against the Charleston Cougars. The Pirates are riding high on a five-game winning streak as Coach Ivan Thomas's side takes on CAA preseason favorite Charleston. While the Cougars fell in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines Dimond Head Classic, it would be their only loss in the month of December.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Prior to joining the conference Hampton had faced the Charleston once during the 1999-00 season. HU fell in the first meeting 76-58. Since joining the CAA the two sides have faced three times. In the history of the program, Hampton has not defeated the Cougars.

ABOUT HAMPTON

In its last time out, Hampton defeated Howard 83-67 inside the Convocation Center. Wayne Bristol Jr. led the Pirates in scoring with 18 points and grabbed five rebounds. With the win, Coach Thomas's squad finished the month of December undefeated. Prior to last Saturday's contest, the program had not finished a month undefeated since the 2002-03 campaign. Hampton's Daniel Johnson would be named the CAA's Rookie of the Week. It was the first time this season that the Chicago, Ill native, won the award.

As conference play resumes, the Pirates throughout the 2024-25 campaign have received production off the bench. HU's bench is scoring 40.2 points per game which is third in the nation and first in the CAA. On separate occasions, Hampton's leading scorer has come off the bench. The Pirates have also had success winning the turnover battle by 3.2 per contest. Hampton has been able to have a positive margin forcing a conference-high 14.3 turnover per game.

ABOUT CHARLESTON

The Cougars enter Thursday's clash with a 10-3 overall record. Charleston is coached by Chris Mack who is in his first season at the helm. Prior to taking to over the reigns at Charleston, Mack had been at Lousiveille for four seasons. Coach Mack has been a staple in the NCAA Tournament making it nine of his 12 seasons as a head coach.

Similar to the Pirates, the Cougars have been one of the better free-throw shooting teams in the country. On average Charleston is shooting 76 percent from the charity stripe which is 56th in the country. Antre Brzovic has been on a tear for Coach Mack's side. The senior ranks inside the top 10 of the conference in 14 different statistical categories. Brzovic is the Cougar's leading scorer averaging 19.2 points per game which is 35th in the country.
