Pirates Begin Three Game Road Stint Against Howard

HAMPTON, Va.  (Jan. 31, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team pauses Coastal Athletic Association play to face the Howard Bison. The Pirates contest against the Bison marks the start of three game road stint. Saturday's matchup between the two programs will be played in the Sports & Entertainment Arena in Washington, D.C. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

Since Hampton has become a Division I program the Pirates led the series 43-8 and have won the previous two meetings. In the last meeting between Hampton and Howard, Coach Ivan Thomas's side won 83-67. The Pirates offense was firing on all cylinders shooting 47 percent from the field and 41 percent from beyond the arc. Wayne Bristol Jr., Noah Farrakhan, George Beale Jr., and Kyrese Mullen all finished the game in double figures. Bristol Jr. led HU in scoring with 18 points and grabbed five rebounds. 

ABOUT HAMPTON 

The Pirates are coming off an 78-69 defeat to the Northeastern Huskies inside the Convocation Center. While Hampton grabbed 13 offensive rebounds, HU lost the rebounding battle to the Huskies  35-32. Coach Thomas's squad shot an improved 54 percent from beyond the arc in the second half. Beale Jr. led the Pirates in scoring off the bench with 19 points. For the 14th time this season the Suffolk, Va. native, has been in double figures. 

Throughout the season Hampton has been one of the better rebounding teams in the CAA. With 36.7 boards per game the Pirates rank fifth in the league for rebounds per contest. Where Hampton has excelled is on the offensive glass producing 13.6 per game. The Pirates have at least grabbed 10 offensive rebounds in 18 of the 21 games played this season. 

ABOUT HOWARD

Since the last meeting between the two sides, the Bison started out MEAC play 3-0. However, Howard is currently on a three game losing streak falling to two non-Division I opponents. In its last time out, Howard fell on the road to Norfolk State 92-75. Four of Howard's starters finished the contest with double figures. Cameron Shockley-Okeke led the way on the offensive end for the Bison with 19 points. 

Throughout the 2024-25 campaign Howard has been one of the top offensive teams in the country. The Bison with an effective field goal percentage of 55.4 rank 36th in the country. Howard's success has come from beyond the arc shooting an impressive 39.9 percent. Marcus Dockery and Shockley-Okeke have been two of the best three-point shooters in the MEAC.
