Virginia Tops Pirates in Men’s Hoop Action

Box Score CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Nov. 11, 2025) … Virginia (3-0) jumped to a quick lead and never looked back as the Cavaliers posted a 91-53 victory over Hampton (1-2) at the John Paul Jones Center.

Michael Eley was a bright spot with 16 points for the Pirates.

After a slow start, the Pirates closed the gap to 10-8 on an Eley bucket. But the Wahoos outside shooting and rebounding prowess proved to be too much for the young Pirates. Six straight points upped the Wahoos lead to 16-8 at the 12:01 mark. Leading 21-14, Virginia reeled off 10 straight points to take a 31-14 lead with 6:52 to go. The Cavaliers held the Pirates scoreless in the final 3:37 of the half while scoring 10 consecutive points to lead 47-19 at intermission.

Virginia outrebounded the Pirates 49-25 for the game, had nine blocked shots with eight steals. The Cavaliers shot 55 percent from the field with 11 three-pointers. Hampton shots 31.7 percent and finished with six treys with five coming in the second half.

"Virginia is a really, really good team from top-to-bottom. They are big outside, can make shots from the outside and they play good defense," Pirate coach Ivan Thomas said. "I think we have a good team. I really do. And it's games like this that give us experience when we start league play."

Virginia outrebounded the Pirates 22-7 in the first half while shooting 61.5 percent from the field and canning seven three-pointers. Hampton shot 30.4 percent from the field with one trey. The taller Wahoos exerted their inside strength with 18 points in the paint while totaling five blocked shots. The Virginia bench chipped in 26 points led by Ugonna Onyenso finished the first half with 12 points and six rebounds, both first half highs. Eley led the Pirates with five first half points.

Hampton scored the first basket of the second half before Virginia tallied eight straight points to lead 55-21. The lead grew to 35, 58-23, early in the second stanza. Hampton closed the gap capped by an old fashioned three-point play my Quintin Cooper to make it 60-29. The teams traded baskets before the Wahoos went on a 12-0 run to boost the advantage to 73-31 with 11:04 to go before an Eley three-pointer snapped the streak and a trey by Xzavier Long made it 73-37. Down the stretch, Eley took control for the Pirates, outscoring the Wahoos in the game's final 10 minutes.

The game at Virginia was the first of six consecutive games on the road for the Pirates. Hampton plays in the Brown Bears Invitational (Nov. 14 and 16) and at Boston College (Nov. 18) before playing at Norfolk State (Nov. 21) and UMES (Nov. 25). The next home date for the Pirates is Dec. 1 against Apprentice School.
