Men's Basketball To Play In Brown Bears Invitational This Weekend

HAMPTON, Va. (Nov. 14, 2025) … Hampton began a stretch of six consecutive road games when the Pirates took on Virginia in Charlottesville on Tuesday night.

Next up for the young team will be a road trip to New England. Coach Ivan Thomas's team will play in the Brown Bears Invitational in Providence, R.I. on Friday and Sunday. The Pirates enter the tournament with a 1-2 record. Both Brown and Holy Cross are 0-3 on the season. Hampton will take on Brown on Friday before playing Holy Cross on Sunday.

After playing in the Brown Bears Invitational, Hampton plays at Boston College (Nov. 18) before road games at Norfolk State (Nov. 21) and UMES (Nov. 25). The Pirates will not return to the Convocation Center until Dec. 1 when Hampton hosts Apprentice School and then face Loyola (Md.) on Dec. 3.

The Pirates play 10 of their first 13 games on the road prior to the Christmas break. The streak includes trips to Wisconsin, Virginia, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, back to Virginia and then Maryland.
In the meantime, the Pirates will enjoy the balmy November climate in New England before heading home.

The Game
Hampton head coach Ivan Thomas returns to Rhode Island as the Pirates play in the Brown Bears Invitational. Thomas was the Associate Director of Player Development and Assistant Coach under head coach Ed Cooley at Providence from 2016-23. He followed Cooley to Georgetown for a season before taking the head coaching reins at Hampton in 2024.

The Pirate coaching staff has Providence connections, as well.

Associate head coach/general manager Greg Fahey was a graduate assistant at Providence in 2018-19. Kyron Cartright, assistant coach/offensive coordinator, earned a bachelor's degree from Providence in 2018 and was a special assistant on the basketball staff in 2022-23. Director of Basketball Operations Jack Manning earned his bachelor's (2022) and master's (2024) degrees from Providence and served as a manager and then graduate assistant during his college days.

Thomas surprised the experts in 2024-25. With a rebuild roster, his first Hampton team posted a 17-16 mark, the first winning season for the Pirates in six years. Included in the total was a win in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament. Prior to his arrival, the Pirates had posted five straight losing seasons with a combined record of 52-95 (.354).

While Thomas may enjoy a meal on Federal Hill or sip a Del's Lemonade during his visit, his attentions will be on Brown and Holy Cross.
