HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 10, 2025) … Hampton wraps a three-game road set facing Charleston on Jan. 10 at TD Arena. The Pirates started the new year with a 49-45 loss at UNCW on Jan. 3 before losing 86-72 at Campbell on Jan. 8.
The Pirates are a perfect 5-0 at the Convocation Center this season and boast a nine-game winning streak at home dating back to the 2024-25 campaign.
But Coach
Ivan Thomas's team is 3-8 in games away from home. Hampton is 2-5 on enemy courts and 1-3 on neutral sites, losing their last two games on the road.
Lady Luck hasn't been on Hampton's side against the Cougars. Charleston has won all five meetings by an average margin of 21.4, 89.8-68.4.
The 2025-26 edition of the Pirates are built on a swarming, pressure defense that has limited three CAA opponents to 56.7 points per game. Through 17 games, Hampton has yielded just 66.6 points per contest.
Following the three-game road swing, the Pirates host North Carolina A&T, Monmouth and UNCW.
The Game
Michael Eley etched his name in the record books for his performance at Campbell on Jan. 8. Eley exploded for a career high 43 points, tying the Hampton record for points in a game since the school moved to Division I in 1986. He also tied for eighth place for most points in a single game in CAA history.
Although he scored more than half of Hampton's points against the Camels, it was not enough as Campbell prevailed 86-72.
Eley finished with 13 field goals including three treys while converting 14-of-15 free throws.
He missed two games due to a foot injury and played just 10 minutes against UNCW in his first game back, going scoreless in 10 minutes of action.
Hampton's identity has been one of tough defense and physical play. In its first three conference tilts, the Pirates yielded just 56.7 points. Campbell exploded for 86 points, the second-most allowed by Hampton this season.
The game at Charleston is the final stop in a three-game road set. The Pirates return home for three straight games at the Convocation Center starting Jan. 19 against longtime rival North Carolina A&T.
