JUST SAW THIS BUNCH
These teams played 22 days ago in Elon, North Carolina as the Phoenix took an 84-75 win over Hampton in the Schar Center. Hampton trailed 38-16 with 6:13 left in the half and trimmed the deficit to 56-52 with 4:42 left in the third, but that was as close as Hampton got.
Kayla Lezama had 23 points, while Kiki McElrath had 18 and Aaryn Battle had 11 and eight assists for Hampton.
LEZAMA GOES OFF .. AGAIN
Junior Kayla Lezama recorded a career-high, for the second straight game, going off for 29 points in the 88-75 loss to Charleston on January 11. She was 11-of-18 from the floor, 6-of-6 from the line and 1-of-2 from 3-point range. That was the second straight game that Lezama recorded a career-high and now leads the CAA in scoring in league games averaging 23.3 points per game.
She had 23 points in the loss at Elon on January 4 to set a then career high and matched that at W&M on January 16.

RECORD BOOK TWEAKING
Several tweaks have been made in the record books through the early stages of the 2025-26 season:
• The Pirates held the Apprentice School Builders to the fewest points in a game (21) in Hampton history topping the previous mark of 26 points done twice, last being in 2010 in a 67-26 win over Winston-Salem State.
• The 84-point margin of victory was the second largest in school history and the largest in the NCAA D1-era (1995-present).
• The 51.7% shooting from the field was the first time that the Pirates have been over 50% from the field since the end of the 2018-19 season when they hit 53% against High Point.
• The 10 assists for Smith were the most in a game since Amyah Reaves dished 10 helpers against Gardner-Webb on Dec. 17, 2024.
• The 26 assists were the third-most in a game in the NCAA D1 era and the most since they dished out 29 assists against Mid-Atlantic Christian on Dec. 15, 2018.
• The 45 field goals made were the most in a game in the NCAA D1 era topping the 44 against Mid-Atlantic Christian on Dec. 15, 2018.
• The 87 field goal attempts were the fourth most in a game in the NCAA D1 era
• The 105 points were the third most in a game in the NCAA D1 era. Hampton scored 106 against Howard (2/28/15) and 115 against Mid-Atlantic Christian (12/15/18).
• Against Gardner-Webb on November 16, the Pirates scored the eighth-fewest points in a game in the NCAA D1 era equaling the mark against Stony Brook (3/7/24) scoring 35 points.

PIRATES IN JANUARY
In the 51-year history of Hampton University women's basketball, the Pirates are 286-157 in the month of January. On January 26, Hampton is 15-6 with wins over George Mason, Elizabeth City State (3), Va. State (2), Bowie State, Richmond, Delaware State, Bethune-Cookman, Howard, Norfolk State, Gardner-Webb, Radford and Winthrop.

BREAKING MARKS - DEFENSE
The 49 points allowed to W&M on January 16 is the lowest against a NCAA Division I opponent this season. Stony Brook scored 54 points in the CAA opener and Hampton allowed 55 points against Gardner-Webb and Norfolk State.
The 49 points is also the second lowest allowed in a CAA contest since Hampton joined the league. Hofstra scored 42 points in falling 49-42 to Hampton on March 1, 2024.

BREAKING MARKS – OFFENSE
The 75 points scored at Elon by the Pirates were the most in a conference game under head coach Tamisha Augustin. The Pirates did score 75 in a CAA Tournament matchup last season with Monmouth.
Hampton matched that output in their next contest scoring 75 against Charleston on January 11.

BINGO CARD SHOULD BE FULL
Hampton completed a road heavy month of December with several moments of marking items off the proverbial "bingo card". Between a nail in the tire of an airplane causing a delay heading to Orlando, cancelled flight craziness leading to a 6.5 hour bus ride to Eastern Kentucky University from Atlanta, arriving at the hotel in the midst of a midnight monsoon at EKU to leaving with snow flurries later that morning for the game. One would think/hope that the Pirates have now spelled B-I-N-G-O with the month.
PLAYED THEM TIGHT
Last year, the Pirates were involved in 18 games, including seven of their last 10, that were decided by 10 points or less and sported a 7-11 mark in those games.
In Hampton's Battle of the Bay win over Norfolk State, the Pirates picked up where that left off last season scoring a 57-55 win which snapped a 28-game home court winning streak for the Spartans. They pulled another two-point win on November 29 with a 58-56 victory over Buffalo.
So far in 2025-26, the Pirates are 4-3 in games decided by 10 points or less.

OH CAPTAIN – MY TRI-CAPTAINS
The Hampton Pirates named tri-captains for the 2025-26 season and those were seniors Kiya Dorroh, Olivia Smith and junior Kayla Lezama.

FRESHMAN BLOCK PARTY
Freshman Akilah Shelton made her presence known in the HBCU Hoops Invitational in Orlando as she swatted a season-high five shots in each of the two Hampton wins. She had three at Eastern Kentucky and in the CAA opening win over Stony Brook. The Georgia native and has had at least two swats in eight of her 16 games played.

KENNEDY AND KENNEDY
Basketball standouts Elijah Kennedy on the men's side and Tyra Kennedy from the Pirates women's team (no relation) were nominated for the Dean Ehler's Leadership and Sport Excellence Awards. The awards are presented to the men's and women's basketball student-athletes who embody the highest standards of leadership, integrity, teamwork and sportsmanship in academic/athletic achievements and community engagement.

TEAMMATES ONCE FOES
Two of Hampton's four Power4 transfers were on opposite sides of a pair of ACC matchups in the 2023-24 season as Kayla Lezama (Boston College) and Aaryn Battle (Pitt) faced off. While each may have gotten the better of the individual matchups, Lezama's Eagles were victorious in both encounters.
On Jan. 14, 2024, an 84-71 BC win, Lezama had six points and one rebound while Battle had four points and four boards. Almost two months later on March 3, Lezama didn't scratch while Battle had two points and six rebounds though BC won 84-58.

IN THE CLASSROOM
The women's basketball team finished the fall semester with a stellar 3.51 grade point average as 12 players earned Dean's List honors for the fall semester.
That group included: Taylor Gibson, Aaryn Battle, Arlisha Boston, Kiya Dorroh, Le'Asia Foreman, Tyra Kennedy, Kiki McElrath, Casey Miller, Tiani Abrams, Aisha Dabo, Kayla Lezama, Akilah Shelton and Olivia Smith.

TRIPLE-DOUBLE LIST
The Pirates have had three triple-doubles in the NCAA Division I Era (1995-present). LaShondra Dixon had the first one on Feb. 12, 2001 against Coppin State as she had 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Almost two years later, also against Coppin State, Lynetta Sullivan had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists on Jan. 13, 2003.
The last triple-double for Hampton University was done by Malia Tate-DeFreitas on Jan. 9, 2016 against Bethune-Cookman as she had 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

NEXT UP
The Pirates head to UNCW for a 7 pm tip on Friday night and then return home to host N.C. A&T at 2 p.m. on February 1.
