Jovan Jordan-Whitter Named Hampton University Men's and Women's Head Tennis Coach

HAMPTON, Va. (June 16, 2026) — Hampton University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Anthony D. Henderson, Sr. announced today the hiring of Jovan Jordan-Whitter as the new head coach of the Hampton men's and women's tennis programs, signaling a new era of growth and competitive excellence for Pirate tennis.

Jordan-Whitter joins the Pirate family following two seasons as the inaugural head coach of the University of New England's men's and women's tennis programs. Tasked with building both programs from the ground up, he quickly established a competitive foundation, guiding his teams to a combined 17 wins in the most recent season. Notably, the women's program qualified for its conference tournament in its very first year of competition—an early indicator of his ability to develop talent and build culture.

"Jovan brings a dynamic combination of leadership, international experience, and a proven ability to build and elevate programs," said Henderson. "We are excited to welcome him to Hampton University. His track record of success, particularly in developing student-athletes and establishing competitive programs from the ground up, aligns perfectly with our vision for the future of Hampton tennis. We believe his leadership will energize both programs, enhance our competitiveness within the conference, and position us for sustained success on and off the court."

Prior to his time at UNE, Jordan-Whitter served at the University of Massachusetts Boston from 2021 to 2023. He began as an assistant coach for both programs, contributing to a championship culture that saw the men's team capture the Little East Conference (LEC) title in Spring 2022 and the women's team follow with a conference championship in Fall 2022.

He was elevated to interim head coach in late 2022, where he assumed leadership of both programs during a critical transition period. Jordan-Whitter guided the men through the Spring 2023 conference season and led the women to an NCAA Tournament appearance. His momentum continued into Fall 2023, when he delivered one of the most successful seasons in program history, leading the women to an 11-2 overall record, a perfect 8-0 mark in LEC play, and another conference championship. His outstanding leadership earned him 2023 LEC Coach of the Year honors.

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Jordan-Whitter brings a global perspective through his tenure as head coach of the Bermuda National Tennis Teams from 2017 to 2022. During that time, he led both the men's and women's programs, contributing to the development of elite-level players and strengthening Bermuda's presence in international competition.

Jordan-Whitter was coached in junior tennis by soon-to-be Hampton University Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Arthur Carrington.

As a player, Jordan-Whitter represented Bermuda in Davis Cup competition from 2001 to 2004 and again in 2017. His collegiate career included competition at the NCAA Division I level at Temple University before transferring to UMass Boston, where he earned Little East Conference Player of the Year honors.

Jordan-Whitter completed his bachelor's degree in liberal arts from UMass Boston in the summer of 2024, further underscoring his commitment to academic and athletic excellence.
"I am truly honored and excited to join the Hampton University family," said Jordan-Whitter. "This is a prestigious institution with a strong tradition of excellence, and I look forward to building competitive men's and women's tennis programs that reflect that standard. My goal is to develop student-athletes who excel both on the court and in the classroom, while fostering a culture of discipline, accountability, and pride. I am eager to get to work and contribute to the continued success of Hampton Athletics."

He and his wife Kathelin have three children, Amirah, Sahara and Kairo.
