LADY PIRATES SPLIT MEAC WEEKEND

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University volleyball team split its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matches over the weekend, beating Howard on Sunday at Holland Hall after falling in straight sets at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Friday evening.

The Lady Pirates upended Howard 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 25-22), thanks in large part to 49 team kills in 159 total attacks, for a team hitting percentage of .136. Hampton had 12 attacks and just three errors in 36 attacks in the first set for a .250 hitting percentage. The Lady Pirates took the first two sets with a combined 27 kills and 12 errors.

Hampton held the advantage in service aces, 6-2.

Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Lady Pirates with 15 kills and five errors in 39 total attacks for a .256 hitting percentage. Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) added 12 kills for the Lady Pirates, while Mianna Armstrong recorded 10. Armstrong and Wynne recorded double-doubles; Armstrong added 15 digs on defense, while Wynne added 14.

Lihi Elkayam had 40 of Hampton's 45 assists, while Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) led the Lady Pirates with 19 digs on defense. Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) and Suput also each had a team-high two service aces.

Gazelle d'Artoid, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, led the Bison with 10 kills; she added 12 assists for Howard's lone double-double.

UMES beat the Lady Pirates 3-0 (25-23, 25-10, 25-13) Friday evening at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center, behind the strength of 34 kills and six errors in 63 team attacks, for a team hitting percentage of .444. The Lady Hawks hit .579 as a team in the second set, recording 12 kills and just one error in 19 total attacks.

Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) led the Lady Pirates (7-14, 2-2 MEAC) with eight kills in 14 attacks, for a hitting percentage of .429. Harrison added six kills for Hampton, while also recording one of the team's two service aces. Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) added five kills and no errors in 10 attacks, recording a .500 hitting percentage.

Elkayam had 19 of Hampton's 21 assists, while Suput led the team with five digs on defense. Armstrong and Wynne each added four digs for the Lady Pirates.

Whitney Johnson led UMES with 14 kills; Bella Jade Romero recorded a match-high 25 assists.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Baltimore, Md. to take on Morgan State at 6 p.m., before returning to Holland Hall on Sunday for a 3 p.m. match against Delaware State.
