BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University volleyball team will continue Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this weekend, traveling to take on Morgan State Friday evening, before playing host to Delaware State on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Pirates (7-14, 2-2 MEAC) will face off against the Lady Bears in Baltimore Friday evening at 6 p.m., while Sunday's match against the Lady Hornets will start at 3 p.m., as part of the school's Homecoming weekend.
Hampton swept both matches with Morgan State (6-18, 1-3) last season en route to a 4-6 MEAC record and its first MEAC Tournament berth in five years. The Lady Pirates fell on the road to Delaware State on Oct. 6, when the Lady Hornets took away a
3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20) victory.
Hampton beat Howard
3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 25-22) this past Sunday afternoon at Holland Hall, and has won five of its last nine matches. The Lady Pirates are tied for third in the MEAC Northern Division with the Bison; Maryland-Eastern Shore (15-6, 4-0) leads the division, with Delaware State (13-11, 3-1), featuring reigning MEAC Player of the Week Cassandra Joyner, one game back in second place.
The Lady Pirates are 3-1 at Holland Hall this season, and 1-6 on the road.
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) leads the Lady Pirates with 175 kills on the season, while junior
Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.) leads the team in kills per set with an average of 2.49. Lina Cordoba, with 98 kills in 65 sets and just 38 errors in 230 total attacks, leads the team with a .261 hitting percentage.
Cordoba (Bogota, Columbia) also leads the team with 51 total blocks, an average of 0.78 per set.
Wynne and
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) each have 22 service aces so far this season to lead the Lady Pirates, while Elkayam is sixth in the MEAC with 525 assists (7.72 per set). Junior
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) is second in the MEAC in digs on defense, recording 273 (3.64 per set) on the season.
As a team, the Lady Pirates are second in the MEAC in opponents' hitting percentage; teams are hitting just .180 against Hampton this season; Delaware State leads the MEAC in opponents' hitting percentage at .170. Hampton is also fourth in the conference with 1.80 service aces per set – 185 on the season.
