DOVER, Del. –
The Hampton University volleyball team will open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this weekend, taking to the road to face Delaware State on Friday, before visiting Coppin State on Sunday.

The Lady Pirates will face the Lady Hornets on Friday at 7 p.m. in Dover, Del., before taking to Baltimore, Md. to face the Lady Bears of Coppin State at 2 p.m.

Hampton is coming off a 3-1 (8-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-19) loss to North Carolina Central on Sunday. That match marked the second time this season the Eagles have beaten the Lady Pirates; NCCU beat Hampton 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 17-25, 26-24) on Sept. 25 as part of the North Carolina Central Volleyball Tournament.

Hampton lost both matches to Delaware State last season, but swept the season series with Coppin State. Those two wins, along with the Lady Pirates' 3-2 win at Morgan State last Nov. 2, clinched the team's first MEAC Tournament berth in five years – and the first for head coach Pedro Gonzalez.

The Lady Pirates (5-12) were picked to finish fifth in the MEAC Northern Division in the preseason.

Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) has recorded a team-high 134 kills (2.27 per set), while Brittany Wynne is averaging a team-high 2.56 kills a set, sitting 10th in the MEAC. Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.) is also ninth in the MEAC in points, averaging 3.07 per set.

Lina Cordoba (Bogota, Columbia) has a hitting percentage of .286 (81 kills, 27 errors, 189 attacks) to lead the team. Wynne and Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) each lead the team with 18 service aces, while Harrison has 17. Cordoba has 15 service aces and Adriana Vazquez (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) has recorded 14.

As a team, the Lady Pirates are 10th in the country in service aces with 116, an average of 1.93 per set.

Elkayam has 387 of the team's 502 assists, averaging 7.30 a set to sit seventh in the MEAC. Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) leads the team with 216 digs on defense, coming in third in the MEAC with an average of 3.60 digs per set.
