HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team has just three matches remaining in the 2009 regular season, with two of them at home in Holland Hall over the next week.
The Lady Pirates will travel to Washington, D.C. on Friday for a 6 p.m. match against Howard, before returning to Hampton on Sunday to take on Morgan State in its MEAC regular-season finale at 3 p.m. The Lady Pirates will close the regular season on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Norfolk State.
The Lady Pirates (8-17, 3-5 MEAC) are just 1-7 on the road this season, but have a 4-3 record at Holland Hall. Hampton is tied for fourth with Morgan State (8-20, 3-5 MEAC) in the MEAC Northern Division, though the Lady Bears currently hold the tiebreak advantage thanks to a 3-0 win over the Lady Pirates on Oct. 23. Howard (8-24, 4-4 MEAC) is third in the MEAC North; the Lady Pirates beat the Bison 3-1 on Oct. 18 in Holland Hall.
Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.), with 190 kills, is leading the Lady Pirates in that category, averaging 2.44 kills per set on the season.
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) leads the team in total kills with 197, and
Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) leads the team among players who've played in at least 30 sets in hitting percentage at .253.
Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia) has a .307 hitting percentage in 26 sets played so far this season.
Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) leads the team and sits 10th in the MEAC in scoring in conference action, averaging 2.93 kills per set in MEAC play – while also averaging 3.19 digs per set in conference play, the second-best mark on the team and sixth-best average in the conference.
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) is sixth in the MEAC, averaging 7.58 assists per set, while
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) sits second in the conference with 333 digs on defense, an average of 3.83 per set.
The Lady Pirates are third in the MEAC, allowing opponents to hit just .176 on the season. Hampton is also fifth in the conference in blocks (134.5, 1.55 per set) and service aces (149, 1.71 per set).
The 2009 MEAC Volleyball Championships will be held Nov. 21-23 in Baltimore, Md.; the top four teams in each division will qualify for the tournament. Hampton qualified for the MEAC Championships last season for the first time in five years, falling in the quarterfinal round to eventual conference champion Florida A&M.
