LADY PIRATES FALL TO MORGAN STATE IN FOUR SETS

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University closed its 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schedule on Sunday afternoon with a loss, as Morgan State left Holland Hall with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 25-19) win.

Morgan State (10-20, 4-6 MEAC) had a .166 hitting percentage, thanks to 47 kills and 22 errors in 151 total attacks. The Lady Bears hit .229 (15 kills, seven errors, 35 attacks) in the second set and .225 (13 kills, four errors, 40 attacks) in the fourth set. The Lady Pirates had 42 kills and 38 errors in 167 total attacks for a team hitting percentage of .024.

There were 23 ties and 10 lead changes in the match; 17 of those lead changes and nine of the lead changes came in the third set.

Hampton held a 6-5 edge in service aces, while Morgan State led in team blocks 10-9.

Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) led the Lady Pirates with 11 kills and 13 digs for her eighth double-double of the season, while Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) had nine kills and Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) added eight. Lihi Elkayam's two kills in seven chances gave her a team-best .286 hitting percentage.

Harrison also led the Lady Pirates with three service aces.

Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 38 of Hampton's 42 assists, while Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) led the defense with 21 digs. Adriana Vazquez (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) added 10 digs for the Lady Pirates.

Erin Cox led the Lady Bears with 16 kills and 20 digs, while Ivanti Bush had 12 kills and 13 digs and Jourdan Lemons had 12 kills.

The loss places the Lady Pirates (9-18, 4-6 MEAC) in a three-way tie for third in the MEAC Northern Division with Howard and Morgan State. The top four teams in the MEAC North will advance to the 2009 MEAC Championships, which will be held Nov. 21-23 in Baltimore, Md. Tiebreaker scenarios will determine which two teams will qualify.
