HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University men's basketball team never recovered from a 12-2 run to open the game Saturday night as Coppin State ran away with a 67-43 win at the Convocation Center.
The Pirates (12-14, 5-7 MEAC) didn't score its first basket until the 15:31 mark of the first half, when
Donte Harrison (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a jumper. Hampton went 8-for-27 from the field in the first half, shooting just 29.7 percent as Coppin State went into the half with a 34-16 lead. Michael Harper led the Eagles at that point with nine points.
Hampton scored 27 points in the second half, but shot just 9-for-27 from the floor in the frame.
Chris Tolson (Laurel, Md.) led the Pirates with 10 points on the night, thanks mostly to two 3-pointers in the second half. The Pirates had 26 turnovers and just nine assists, though they did outrebound Coppin State 35-33.
Harrison was Hampton's leading rebounder, pulling down seven boards in the loss.
Harper and Eddie Hayden led four Eagles in double figures with 16 points apiece. Sam Coleman poured in 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Tywain McKee added 10. McKee also led Coppin State with nine rebounds.
The Pirates will return to action on Monday, when they play host to Morgan State. Tip-off will be approximately 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
