HAMPTON, Va. – The Pirates of Hampton University will celebrate Senior Night on national television on Monday, taking on the Bears of Morgan State on ESPNU. Game time will be at 7 p.m.
The Pirates are coming off a tough 67-43 loss to Coppin State on Saturday and have lost six of their last nine games, while the Bears are coming off an 80-64 win over cross-town rival Towson on Saturday as part of ESPN's Bracketbusters series for their eighth straight win.
Hampton leads the all-time series against Morgan State 17-8, a series that didn't start until the 1996-97 season – the year after the Pirates joined the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Hampton has won just three of the last six meetings between the two teams, and the defending MEAC regular -season champion Bears have taken two of the last three games – but Hampton beat the Bears in Baltimore 62-57 on Jan. 26. From 1999-2006, the Pirates won 13 of the 14 games played, including nine straight games against Morgan State in that span.
Chris Tolson (Laurel, Md.) led the Pirates with 10 points on Saturday, while Donte Harrison (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who will be honored as part of Senior Night, led the way with seven rebounds. Vincent Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa.) leads the Pirates in scoring, averaging 12.0 points a game, while Theo Smalling (Tampa, Fla.) leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 5.4 per contest.
Junior guard Reggie Holmes is a large reason why the Bears have won eight straight games and 13 of their last 16, leading the team in scoring and sitting fourth in the MEAC at 16.6 points a game. Senior forward Marquise Kately is the other Bear averaging double figures in scoring, thanks to his 11.2 points a contest, while redshirt-freshman forward Kevin Thompson is leading Morgan State on the boards, pulling down 7.3 rebounds a contest, which is fourth-best in the conference.
The Bears as a team are averaging 66.8 points a game on offense, which is second-best in the MEAC, while only allowing opponents to score 62.9 a contest. Morgan State is also outrebounding its opponents 37.8-35.1 a game. The Bears are averaging 70.8 points a game over their eight-game winning streak.
