PIRATES TO FACE BULLDOGS IN MEAC QUARTERS

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Coming off its first win over Delaware State since the 2006 MEAC Championship Game, the Hampton University men's basketball team will take on the Bulldogs of South Carolina State Wednesday night at 9:30 p.m. in the conference quarterfinals.

The Pirates, the No. 7 seed, beat Delaware State in the opening round on Tuesday 51-32, while South Carolina State, the No. 2 seed, closed the regular season with an 86-73 win over Winston-Salem State.

This will be the 31st meeting between the Pirates and the Bulldogs. Hampton leads the all-time series 16-15, winning four of the last six meetings in the series, including a 74-60 decision earlier this season at the Hampton University Convocation Center. The Pirates are 6-8 when playing the Bulldogs at SHM Memorial Hall, losing in overtime in Orangeburg on Feb. 14. The Pirates' last loss to the Bulldogs in Orangeburg, S.C. was a 63-74 defeat back during the 2006-07 season.

The second-seeded Bulldogs (16-13, 10-6 MEAC) are on a three-game winning streak after closing out the regular season with an 86-73 win over Winston-Salem State. MEAC First Team selection senior forward Jason Johnson leads the Bulldogs (16-13, 10-6 MEAC) in scoring, averaging 14.4 points a game, while also pulling down a team- and conference-high 8.5 rebounds a contest. Junior guard Jason Flagler, who was named to the All-MEAC Second Team, is second in the team in scoring with a 13.1 points-per-game average, pulling in 6.3 boards a contest. Freshman Jimmy Williams, an all-conference rookie team selection, averages 8.3 points and 4.4 rebounds a game.

South Carolina State is averaging a MEAC-best 70.3 points per game on offense, while giving up 67.7 points a night on defense. The Bulldogs outrebound their opponents by an average of 40.2-32.4 boards per night, leading the conference with a +7.7 rebounding margin.
