LADY PIRATES TAKE ONE IN SCSU SPIKEFEST

ORANGEBURG, S.C. –
The Hampton University volleyball team took one of the four matches it played over the weekend in the South Carolina State SpikeFest, beating Winston-Salem State on Saturday.

Hampton won that match 3-2 (25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 22-25, 15-13) to snap a nine-match losing streak. It marked the second time this season that the Lady Pirates (3-10) beat Winston-Salem State; Hampton took a 3-0 victory over the Lady Rams on Aug. 28.

Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Lady Pirates with 23 kills in the match, while Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) added 11 kills in 27 attacks. The Lady Pirates had eight service aces, with Wynne, Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) and Mariah Baylor each recording two.

Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 35 of Hampton's 60 assists; Mika Chow (Rocky Mountain Home, Alberta) had 16 more. Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) led the team with 16 digs on defense, while Armstrong added 12.

Annika Barnwell led Winston-Salem State with 21 kills, while Ashley Harris added 14.

Providence beat Hampton 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-13) in the Lady Pirates' first game of the tournament on Friday. The Friars had 13 team kills and only one error in the first set for a .400 hitting percentage.

Harrison led the Lady Pirates with 11 kills and a team-best .474 hitting percentage, while Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) had two of the team's seven service aces. Elkayam had 15 of the team's 16 assists, while Suput had three of nine digs on defense.

Abby Majewski and Lauren Fletcher each had seven kills for Providence.

The Lady Pirates closed Friday's action with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-22) loss to UNC-Asheville. UNCA had 32 kills in 83 attempts with just 12 errors for a .241 hitting percentage.

Wynne and Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia) led the Lady Pirates with six kills each, while Harrison and Adriana Vazquez (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) each had five. Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) led the team with three service aces. Elkayam had 19 of the team's 20 assists, while Suput recorded a team-high 10 digs on defense.

Cindi Miller led UNC-Asheville with 13 kills. Raquel Miotto had four of the team's six service aces.

After beating Winston-Salem State, the Lady Pirates concluded with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 27-25) loss to Wofford. Wofford had 32 kills in 96 total attempts with just 13 errors.

Harrison had a team-high nine kills for Hampton and a team-best .240 hitting percentage, with Vazquez adding another seven. Wynne had two of the team's four service aces.

Elkayam had 23 of Hampton's 25 assists, while Vazquez led the Lady Pirates with 13 digs on defense. Suput added 11 digs.

Shanna Hughes had nine kills for Wofford, with Stacy Byrd adding eight of her own.

The Lady Pirates will return to action Friday and Saturday, when they travel to Durham, N.C. for the North Carolina Central Tournament, where they'll face North Carolina A&T, N.C. Central, Winston-Salem State and Delaware State.
