DURHAM, N.C. – The Hampton University volleyball team will travel to North Carolina Central this weekend to compete in the school's annual North Carolina Central Volleyball Tournament. The Lady Pirates will take on four teams over the course of Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Pirates will open play at 3 p.m. on Friday against North Carolina A&T, before taking on tournament host North Carolina Central at 7 p.m. Hampton will begin Saturday's action against Winston-Salem State at 11 a.m., and the Lady Pirates' final match will be at 5 p.m. against MEAC North foe Delaware State.
This will mark the third time this season the Lady Pirates (3-10) will face Winston-Salem State. Hampton defeated the Lady Rams 3-0 to open the season on Aug. 28, then beat them again 3-2 this past Saturday in the South Carolina State SpikeFest. That win snapped Hampton's nine-match losing streak.
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) leads the Lady Pirates with 96 kills on the season, while Brittany Wynne, with 95 kills, leads the team and is ninth in the MEAC with an average of 2.57 a set. Harrison and
Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) hold the team lead in service aces with 12 each, while Lihi Elkayam and
Adriana Vazquez (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) each have 11 and Wynne has 10.
Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.) is also ninth in the MEAC in points, averaging 2.99 a set.
Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) leads the Lady Pirates with 255 assists on the season (6.89 a set), which is also the eighth-best average in the conference.
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) leads the team and is second in the MEAC in digs with 160, an average of 3.72 per set.
