HAMPTON, Va. – After a month of traveling throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, the Hampton University volleyball team will return to Holland Hall for a pair of matches this week, taking on Chowan on Thursday and North Carolina Central on Sunday.
The Lady Pirates will play Division II Chowan in an exhibition match on Thursday starting at 6 p.m. Sunday's match against North Carolina Central will begin at 6 p.m., marking the second time this season the two teams have faced one another.
NCCU defeated the Lady Pirates
3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 17-25, 26-24) this past Friday during the North Carolina Central Volleyball Tournament.
The Lady Pirates (5-11) won two of their three matches this past weekend in the NCCU Tournament, beating North Carolina A&T
3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13) on Friday, before beating Winston-Salem State
3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16) on Saturday.
It was the third time this season that Hampton has beaten Winston-Salem State.
Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.) leads the Lady Pirates in kills (127) and kills per set (2.54), while
Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) leads the team with a .275 hitting percentage. Wynne also has a team-high 18 service aces (0.36 per set), while Lihi Elkayam has 17 and
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) has 15 on the season.
Cordoba has 14 service aces of her own.
Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) has 353 of Hampton's 464 assists on the season, for an average of 7.20 per set to place her seventh in the MEAC.
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) leads the team on defense, recording 204 of the team's 559 digs. She averaged 3.64 digs a set, the second-best average in the conference.
Conference play will start on Dec. 9, when the Lady Pirates travel to Dover, Del. to take on Delaware State before playing Coppin State in Baltimore on Oct. 11.
