HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Hampton University volleyball team lost all three of its matches over the weekend at the James Madison Invitational, hosted by James Madison University on Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Pirates (2-4) fell to St. Francis (Pa.) on Friday
3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-14), despite nine kills from
Adriana Vazquez (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) and another seven from
Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.).
Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) had four kills in nine attempts for a team-best .333 hitting percentage.
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 17 of Hampton's 27 assists, while
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) had a team-high eight digs on defense.
Shirley Miller led St. Francis with 13 kills. Lauren Wingard had nine.
The Lady Pirates opened Saturday's play with a
3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-18) loss to tournament host James Madison. Hampton took the first set, thanks in large part to converting nine kills in 28 attempts, but the Dukes regrouped to take the next three.
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) led the Lady Pirates with 12 kills in the match, while Wynne had nine and Vaquez recorded seven.
Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) only took seven attempts, but she turned three of those into kills for a team-best .429 hitting percentage.
Elkayam had 28 of Hampton's 32 assists, and Suput had 25 of the team's 50 digs.
Kelly Turner was one of three JMU players to record double-digit kills with 18, while Danielle Erb had 14 and Lindsay Callahan recorded 10.
Duquesne beat Hampton
3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-16) on Saturday evening to wrap up the weekend. Duquesne had a team hitting percentage of .381 (10 kills, 2 errors, 21 attempts) in the first set and .385 (12 kills, 2 errors, 26 attempts) in the third set.
Vazquez led the Lady Pirates with six kills and a team-best .333 hitting percentage, while Harrison and
Virginia Chell (Emerald Park, Saskatchewan) each recorded five kills.
Mika Chow (Rocky Mountain Home, Alberta) had 19 of Hampton's 21 assists, while Suput recorded 10 of the Lady Pirates' 25 digs.
Suput also had the team's only two service aces.
Nicole Wright led Duquesne with 11 kills, while Sara Scheirman added 10.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday and Saturday, when they will travel to Washington, D.C. for the Georgetown Classic. Hampton will face Maryland on Friday, before taking on Georgetown and William & Mary on Saturday.
