BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University volleyball team will continue Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this weekend, as they head to Coppin State on Friday for a 6 p.m. match, before returning to Holland Hall on Sunday to take on Maryland Eastern Shore at 3 p.m.
Hampton is 28-5 all-time against Coppin State, and the Lady Pirates have won seven straight meetings – including a
3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-17) win on Oct. 10 in Holland Hall for their first conference win of the season.
The Lady Pirates lead the all-time series against UMES 26-22, though the Lady Hawks have won the last 11 meetings – including three wins earlier this season. Hampton last defeated UMES in 2005.
Hampton (6-20, 2-4 MEAC) is coming off back-to-back losses this past weekend, falling in three sets to Morgan State on Friday before losing in straight sets to Delaware State on Sunday. The Lady Pirates are without sophomore
Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia), who suffered a season-ending knee injury, while senior Ivana
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) missed Sunday's match with a concussion.
Senior
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) leads the Lady Pirates with 225 kills so far this season, averaging 2.71 per set. She has 1,023 kills for her career, ranking her fourth on the all-time list. She is also fifth in the MEAC in points with 270.5, accounting for 3.26 points per set.
Freshman
Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) is second on the team in kills with 147 – an average of 1.86 per set – and digs on defense with 150, averaging 1.90 per set. Junior
Lina Cordoba (Bogota, Colombia), with 87 kills and just 35 errors in 212 attacks, leads the team in hitting percentage at .245.
Junior
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) has a team-high 451 assists, averaging 7.05 per set, while junior
Juliana Chavez (Bogota, Colombia) has 213 assists so far this season – an average of 5.32 per set.
Suput, despite only playing in 16 of Hampton's 26 matches so far this season, leads the Lady Pirates in digs on defense with 208 – an average of 3.47 per set. Harrison has 99 digs, averaging 1.19 per set, while Elkayam has 98 (1.53 per set).
Coppin State (3-19, 0-6 MEAC) has lost six straight matches dating back to Oct. 8. Three Lady Eagles have recorded at least 100 kills so far this season, led by junior Ashley Saunders with 192 – an average of 2.56 per set. Junior Alexandria Malesick has 117 kills so far this season, while junior Vanity Massey has 113.
Malesick also leads the team in hitting percentage at .176, while Massey and Saunders each have a team-high 21 service aces.
Freshman Haley Beechler leads Coppin State with 445 assists – an average of 6.01 per set – while Saunders also has a team-high 198 digs on defense, averaging 2.64 per set. Junior Tyler Phillips has 184 digs so far this season, while Beechler has 146 and Massey has 126.
UMES (17-9, 6-0 MEAC) comes into the weekend on an 11-match winning streak, each win coming in a three-set sweep. Freshman Maline Vaitai, the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, leads UMES with 311 kills so far this season, averaging 3.31 per set. Junior Zoe Bowens (284) and freshman Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa (234) have also recorded at least 200 kills for the Lady Hawks.
Redshirt senior Samantha Chukwura, with 185 kills and just 39 errors in 357 attacks, leads the team with a .409 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Stephanie Sierra leads UMES with 838 assists – 9.01 per set – while five Lady Hawks have recorded at least 100 digs on defense: junior Rebecca Prado (a team-high 225), freshman Jingqiao Li (181), Sierra (175), Vaitai (147) and Bowens (133).
