HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team lost its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match of the season on Friday, as Delaware State won
3-1 (25-16, 27-29, 25-12, 25-18) in Holland Hall.
The Lady Hornets hit .116 as a team, thanks to 45 teams kills and 28 errors in 146 total attacks, while also holding a 10-2 edge in service aces. Delaware State hit a team-best .312 (14 kills, four errors in 32 attacks).
The Lady Pirates (4-17, 0-1 MEAC) had their three-match winning streak snapped after hitting .033 as a team with 31 kills and 26 errors in 152 attacks. Hampton hit a team-best .133 (14 kills, eight errors in 45 attacks) in the second set, a set in which the Lady Pirates erased an early 9-3 deficit and battled through 12 ties and six lead changes.
Delaware State (8-9, 1-0 MEAC) had nine kills and nine errors in the second set.
Hampton held a 9.0-6.0 edge in total blocks.
Junior
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) led the Lady Pirates with 11 kills, hitting .281 in the match thanks to just two errors in 32 total attacks. Senior
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) added four kills; she is now 30 kills shy of 1,000 for her career.
Pagan, who accounted for a team-high 11.5 points, has recorded double-digit kills four times this season, including the last two matches.
Junior
Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) and senior
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) each had one service ace.
Elkayam had 21 of Hampton's 23 assists, while Suput led three Lady Pirates in double figures in digs on defense with 19. Armstrong added 13 digs, while Pagan also had 10 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Pagan has recorded double-digit digs five times so far this season.
Sarah Wheatcroft had a team-high 13 kills for Delaware State and accounted for 16.0 points, while Jessica Croucher added 11. Ashley Herman hit a team-best .222 (seven kills, three errors in 18 total attacks), while Martina Ferrari had a team-high four service aces.
Ferrari also recorded 33 of the Lady Hornets' 41 assists.
Four Lady Hornets recorded double-digit digs on defense, led by 30 from Sonja Banicevic. Ferrari also had 15 digs, while Croucher added 11 and Erica Tajchman recorded 10.
