LADY PIRATES TO TAKE ON NORFOLK STATE

NORFOLK, Va. –
Finished with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play, the Hampton University volleyball team will head to Echols Hall on Wednesday, where they will take on rival Norfolk State at 6 p.m.

Hampton is 55-13 all-time against Norfolk State, but the Lady Spartans have won the last five meetings between the two teams, including a five-set win over the Lady Pirates in Holland Hall back on Aug. 31. Hampton last beat Norfolk State in 2007, taking a four-set win on a neutral site before beating the Lady Spartans in straight sets in Holland Hall.

The Lady Pirates (7-23, 3-7 MEAC) closed conference play on Sunday by losing to Morgan State in three sets in Baltimore, Md. after beating Howard in four sets in Holland Hall on Friday. The Lady Pirates sit fifth in the MEAC Northern Division.

Senior Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) leads the Lady Pirates with 270 kills so far this season, averaging 2.73 per set. She now has 1,068 career kills – fourth-most all-time – in 422 career sets, averaging 2.53 kills per set for her career. Harrison is also tied for second on the team with junior Juliana Chavez (Bogota, Colombia) with 17 service aces, and she is fifth in the MEAC in points with 326.0, an average of 3.29 per set.

Senior Lina Cordoba (Bogota, Colombia) leads the team in hitting percentage at .282, thanks to 126 kills --- third-most on the team – and just 43 errors in 294 attacks. Freshman Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) is second on the team in both kills (176, 1.91 per set) and digs on defense (187, 2.03 per set).

Junior Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) leads the team with 531 assists, averaging 7.18 per set, while Chavez has 273 assists – 5.57 per set. Senior Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) leads the team with 261 digs on defense, an average of 3.62 per set, despite missing nine matches.

The Lady Spartans (11-18, 4-2 MEAC) have lost three of their last four matches, including a four-set loss to North Carolina Central on Sunday. With two more conference matches to play, Norfolk State sits third in the MEAC Southern Division, behind Florida A&M and South Carolina State.

Sophomore Charlotte Armstead leads Norfolk State with 268 kills so far this season, averaging 2.48 per set, while freshman Arielle Knafel has 240 kills – an average of 2.26 per set – to go along with a team-high 31 service aces. In all, six Lady Spartans have at least 100 kills on the season. Junior Nicole Kessner in hitting a team-best .287 on the season, thanks to 106 kills and just 22 errors in 293 attacks.

Kessner also leads Norfolk State and sits fifth in the MEAC with 735 assists, averaging 7.74 per set, while freshman Noelle Eagles leads the team and is fourth in the MEAC with 404 digs on defense – an average of 3.78 per set. Knafel has 290 digs, while sophomore Paige Gary-Canty has 222.
