COLD SECOND HALF DOOMS PIRATES AT USF

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. –
A cold second half spelled doom for the Hampton University men's basketball team Thursday night, as San Francisco beat the Pirates 69-57 in the Hilltop Classic at War Memorial Gym.

The loss snapped Hampton's three-game winning streak.

The Pirates (10-3) shot just 35.7 percent (10-for-28) in the second half and 38.6 percent (22-for-57) for the game. Hampton also went just 6-for-15 from the free throw line.

Junior guard Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) led the Pirates with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting, going 4-for-9 from behind the arc. Senior guard Brandon Tunnell (Wilmington, Del.) added 12 points, while sophomore forward Wesley Dunning (Washington, D.C.) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

All but one of Morgan's 16 points came in the first half.

Michael Williams led the Dons (5-9) with 26 points, while Rashad Green poured in 17 points. Angelo Caloiaro grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

San Francisco shot 39.7 percent (23-for-58) from the floor, while also going 14-for-16 from the free throw line. The Dons out-rebounded Hampton 40-39, and San Francisco committed just seven turnovers on the night.

The Pirates jumped out to an 11-5 lead after a layup from senior forward Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) at the 10:24 mark in the first half, but the Dons scored eight straight to take a 13-11 lead with 7:54 left in the half on a Justin Raffington jumper.

The first half saw four ties and five lead changes; Williams gave USF a 33-29 lead with 16 seconds left in the half with a trey, before Morgan sank a 3-pointer of his own at the buzzer to pull the Pirates within one, 33-32, at the break.

The Dons opened the second half on a 14-5 run, taking a 47-37 lead at the 13:29 mark on a Williams jumper. The Pirates pulled within seven, cutting USF's lead to 51-44 with 10:04 remaining on a Funches 3-point play.

Williams gave the Dons their largest lead of the night, 68-52, with 2:20 to play after sinking a pair of free throws.

The Pirates will conclude the Hilltop Classic on Saturday, New Year's Day, when they take on the Rams of Colorado State at 4 p.m. EST.
