HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will take a break from conference play on Monday, as they welcome Longwood to the HU Convocation Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
The Pirates (11-17) have won three straight games for the first time this season after beating Delaware State 64-45 on Saturday night. Senior
Michael Freeman (Alexandria, Va.) recorded his 12th double-double of the season, with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while
Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) added 12 points. Longwood picked up its third win in four games on Thursday, beating North Carolina Central 83-69.
The Pirates are 1-1 all-time against Longwood. The Lancers won the first game between the two teams, 69-66 at the HU Convocation Center on Feb. 20, 2006. The Pirates then beat Longwood 80-59 on Jan. 22, 2007 at Willett Hall.
The Lancers are 12-18 so far this season, going 9-3 at home and 3-13 on the road.
Senior guard/forward Dana Smith leads Longwood in scoring this season, averaging 18.2 points per game while pulling down 7.3 rebounds a night. Sophomore center Antwan Carter leads the team in rebounding with 8.5 per contest, while also averaging 14.7 points per game.
The Lancers are averaging 73.9 points per game on offense, while giving up 78.1 a game on defense. Opponents are out-rebounding Longwood by an average of 35.2-38.5 per game.
The Pirates are 4-6 at the HU Convocation Center so far this season, picking up their first home win on Jan. 3 with a 78-54 win over Fordham. Hampton is 2-4 at home in MEAC play, falling 69-67 to Coppin State on Jan. 9, before beating Morgan State 73-63 on Jan. 11 on ESPNU to give interim coach Edward Joyner Jr. his first conference home win.
