LADY PIRATES OPEN SEASON ON DAY ONE OF TINY LASTER MEMORIAL

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University volleyball team opened the 2010 season on Friday with the Tiny L. Laster Memorial Tournament in Holland Hall, losing both of its matches.

The Lady Pirates (0-2) fell 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 27-25) to Wofford in the evening session, hanging tough against the Terriers. The Lady Pirates actually had more kills than Wofford – a 34-28 advantage – but 37 errors proved to be their undoing.

Hampton had a -.023 hitting percentage, while Wofford, with just 21 errors, hit .060 as a team. The Terriers (1-1) had a team-best .128 hitting percentage in the second game, with 10 kills and five errors in 39 attacks, while Hampton shot a team-best .051 in the third game with 13 kills and 11 errors.

Freshman Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) led Hampton with 10 kills in 31 chances for a .161 hitting percentage. Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) had the team's best hitting percentage, sitting at .286 with three kills and one error in seven chances.

Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.) had Hampton's lone service ace.

Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 31 of Hampton's 34 assists, while Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) had a team-high 23 digs on defense. Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) added eight digs, while freshman Ioana Kalfinova (Sofia, Bulgaria) had seven and Pagan added six.

Amanda Liguori led the Terriers with seven kills.

Hampton lost its first match of the day, falling 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-18) to Bryant.

The Lady Pirates hit .139 (36 kills, 21 errors in 108 total attacks) for the match, including a team-best .233 in the first set thanks to 11 kills and just four errors. The Bulldogs hit .152 as a team, recording 35 kills to just 19 errors.

Armstrong led the Lady Pirates with seven kills, while Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) had six and Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) and Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia) each added five kills. Cordoba's five kills came in seven attacks without an error, giving her a team-best .714 hitting percentage.

Elkayam had all 33 of Hampton's assists, with Suput adding a team-high 12 digs on defense. Armstrong also had eight digs.

Jazmin Stoner had nine kills to lead Bryant (2-0), with Maria Scocca adding eight. The Bulldogs also had four service aces – led by two from Stoner – while Hampton did not record a service ace.

The Lady Pirates return to action on Saturday, as the tournament continues. They will face Towson at 12 p.m., before closing the tournament against Maryland-Eastern Shore at 3 p.m. The first matches of the day will start at 9 a.m., with UMES facing Wofford and Bryant taking on Towson.
