LADY PIRATES PICK UP WIN IN NCCU TOURNEY

The Hampton University volleyball team picked up its second win of the season this past Saturday in the North Carolina Central Tournament held at the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

The Lady Pirates (2-16) defeated tournament host NCCU 3-2 (25-14, 25-19, 16-25, 23-25, 17-15) on Saturday, thanks in large part to a team hitting percentage of .348 (nine kills, one error in 23 attacks) in the fifth set. For the match, Hampton hit .168 (51 kills, 28 errors in 137 attacks).

Hampton hit a team-best .435 in the third set, thanks to 14 kills and just four errors in 23 attacks.

NCCU held a 9-5 edge in service aces.

Senior Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the Lady Pirates with a career-high 20 kills, hitting a team-best .295 thanks to just seven errors in 44 total attacks. Junior Lina Cordoba (Bogota, Columbia) and sophomore Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia) each added nine kills.

Junior Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) had two of Hampton's five aces.

Junior Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) had 39 of Hampton's 48 assists, while senior Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) had a team-high 13 digs on defense. Harrison added 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.

Belinda Behncke-Biney led NCCU with 27 kills.

Maryland Eastern Shore defeated Hampton 3-1 (25-10, 24-26, 25-22, 25-13) in the Lady Pirates' first match on Friday. The Lady Pirates, despite losing their 10th straight to UMES, took a set from the Lady Hawks for the first time since 2006.

Hampton hit a team-best .462 (14 kills, two errors in 26 attacks) in the second set, and .153 (35 kills, 18 errors, 111 attacks) for the entire match. UMES held a 12-10 advantage in service aces, and the Lady Hawks hit .327 (49 kills, 14 errors in 107 attacks) as a team.

Harrison led Hampton with 14 kills, hitting a team-best .433 with just one error in 30 attacks, while freshman Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) added nine kills and a team-high six service aces.

Junior Juliana Chavez (Bogota, Colombia) had 26 of Hampton's 29 assists, while Pagan also recorded a team-high 13 digs on defense.

Kaveigna Lea'aetoa led UMES with 15 kills, while Maline Vaitai added 14 and Samantha Chukwura had 11.

East Tennessee State defeated Hampton 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-21) on Friday, despite another 12 kills from Harrison. Harrison only committed three errors in 27 attacks for a hitting percentage of .333. She also had one of Hampton's two service aces against East Tennessee State.

Elkayam led the way with 19 assists, while Suput had a team-high 10 digs on defense.

Megan Devine led ETSU with 11 kills.
