BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Hampton University volleyball team will compete in the University of Buffalo Tournament at Alumni Arena on Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Pirates will face St. John's on Friday at 4:30 p.m., before facing tournament host Buffalo at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Hampton (0-8) will close out tournament play on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. with a match against Binghamton.
The Lady Pirates have never faced St. John's, Buffalo or Binghamton.
Even with injuries to
Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta),
Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) and
Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.), the Lady Pirates have hung tough and competed against a rigorous schedule.
Senior
Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) leads the Lady Pirates in kills with 46, averaging 2.09 per set, while freshman
Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico), Co-MVP of the Tiny L. Laster Memorial Tournament, has 44 kills on the season – an average of 1.76 per set. Junior
Lina Cordoba (Bogota, Colombia) leads Hampton in hitting percentage at .204, thanks to 19 kills and eight errors in 54 total attacks on the season.
Freshman
Ioana Kalfinova (Sofia, Bulgaria) leads the team with five service aces this season. Harrison is second on the team with three.
Junior
Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) has 194 of Hampton's 212 assists so far this season, an average of 7.46 per set. Pagan leads the team in total digs on defense with 58, while sophomore
Brittany Hill (Sacramento, Calif.) leads all players who've played at least 10 sets with 2.43 digs per set. Elkayam has 46 digs on the season, an average of 1.77 per set.
St. John's (8-1) comes into the tournament on a seven-match winning streak, and the Red Storm is led by junior Anezelika Lukjanska's 81 kills so far this season – an average of 2.45 per set. Junior Brunna Kronbauer leads the Red Storm with an average of 2.75 kills per set and 17 service aces. Among players with at least 25 sets played, senior Diana Banya has a team-best .349 hitting percentage (59 kills, 14 errors, 129 total attacks).
Six players with at least 25 sets played are hitting .223 or better so far this season.
Tournament host Buffalo (6-2) is led by freshman Dana Musil's 84 kills so far this season, an average of 3.00 per set, while senior Kristin Bignell has 66 kills – 2.44 per set. Bignell is also hitting a team-best .414, thanks to just 11 errors in 133 total attacks.
Musil leads the Bulls with 19 service aces.
Freshman Dani Reinert has a team-high 87 assists – 4.83 per set – while freshman Kelly Svoboda is recording 4.37 digs per set on defense, for a total of 118 on the season.
Binghamton (1-5) has lost two straight matches, and is led by senior Michelle McDonough's 71 kills – 3.55 per set – so far this season. Senior Anna Lejina, who's hitting .202 so far this season, has 70 kills and 30 errors in 198 total attacks. McDonough also has a team-high four service aces.
Junior Julie Chambers has 184 of the team's 214 assists, an average of 9.20 per set, while freshman Xiomara Ortiz leads the Bearcats with 69 digs on defense.
