HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will look to start another winning streak on Monday, as the Pirates play host to North Carolina A&T at the HU Convocation Center at 8 p.m.
The Pirates (13-4, 3-1 MEAC), in their second season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., got back into the win column on Saturday by beating Norfolk State 63-56 at the HU Convocation Center. Junior guard
Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) led the Pirates with 20 points, while junior guard
Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) added 16 points. Junior forward
Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and blocked five shots – all in the first half.
The Aggies (8-9, 3-1 MEAC) have won three of their last four games after beating Howard 78-65 on Saturday at the Burr Gymnaisum. Junior guard Marc Hill led three Aggies in double figures with 20 points, while senior forward Thomas Coleman poured in 17 points to go along with a team-high 11 rebounds and junior guard Nic Simpson scored 15 points.
Hampton is 20-9 against North Carolina A&T since moving up to Division I in 1995. The two teams split last season's meetings; the Pirates won 65-55 in Greensboro, N.C. on Jan. 18, 2010, before the Aggies came to the HU Convocation Center on Feb. 15, 2010 to pick up a 65-59 win. Hampton has won five of the last eight meetings between the two teams. At one point, from 2001-05, Hampton had won 10 straight over the Aggies. The Pirates are 9-5 all-time against North Carolina A&T at the HU Convocation Center.
The Aggies went 11-22 last season, finishing tied for eighth with Howard in the MEAC with a 6-10 mark. Returning five freshmen from last year's squad, and welcoming in five more newcomers, the Aggies were picked to finish eighth in the MEAC this season.
Simpson leads the Aggies in scoring so far this season, pouring in 15.0 points per game. Preseason Second Team selection Coleman, on top of pulling down a team-high 10.8 rebounds per contest, is second on the team in scoring with 14.8 points a night – that averages bumps up to 20.3 points per game in MEAC play. Hill is third on the team in scoring, chipping in 11.4 points per game.
The Aggies are averaging 71.2 points per game on offense, while giving up 75.3 points a night.
The Pirates are 4-1 at the HU Convocation Center so far this season following a 63-56 win over Norfolk State on Saturday. Hampton has also beaten Georgia State 60-56, falling to Delaware 55-53, beating Towson 78-67 and beating Liberty 62-59 at home so far this season. The Pirates went 6-6 at home last season, winning their last three games at the Convocation Center.
