TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Fresh off a huge conference win, the Hampton University men's basketball team will take its winning streak to the Lawson Center on Monday, where the Pirates will take on Florida A&M at 7:30 p.m.
The Pirates (15-4, 5-1 MEAC), in their second season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., picked up their third straight win on Saturday, handing Bethune-Cookman its first MEAC loss with a 68-56. Senior forward
Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) led four Pirates in double figures with 15 points, while junior guard
Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) added 12 points. Junior guard
Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) scored 11 points and junior guard
Christopher Tolson (Laurel, Md.) added 10 points.
The Rattlers (6-12, 1-5 MEAC) snapped a seven-game losing streak on Saturday with a 45-38 win over Howard at the Lawson Center. Sophomore forward Amin Stevens led FAMU with 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds, while freshman guard Avery Moore added 11 points.
Hampton is 17-9 against Florida A&M since moving up to Division I in 1995. The Pirates swept last season's meetings, beating the Rattlers 66-53 at the HU Convocation Center on Jan. 25, 2010, before coming to the Lawson Center on Feb. 22 and taking a 70-61 win. Hampton has won three of the last four games over FAMU, the only loss.a 76-75 defeat in overtime during the 2008-09 season. The Pirates won the first-ever meeting against FAMU 81-79 in overtime in 1997. Hampton is 6-5 all-time against the Rattlers on the road.
The Rattlers went 9-22 last season, finishing 10th in the MEAC with a 5-11 conference record and falling to Bethune-Cookman in the MEAC Tournament. FAMU was picked to finish tied for 10th with Coppin State in the MEAC this season.
Stevens leads the Rattlers in scoring, one of two players in double figures with 14.1 points per contest to go along with a team-high 7.9 rebounds per contest. Moore is pouring in 10.3 points per night.
Florida A&M is scoring 65.4 points per night, while giving up 70.1 points a contest.
The Pirates are 5-3 in true road games so far this season, and had won three straight on the road following a season-opening loss at Wake Forest before falling 69-57 at San Francisco. Hampton has beaten Fordham (58-48), George Washington (62-51), High Point (70-64), Coppin State (67-59) and Bethune-Cookman (68-56) on the road. For his head coaching career, Joyner is 11-12 on the road.
