LADY PIRATES SPLIT MATCHES TO CLOSE HAWK INVITATIONAL

The Hampton University volleyball team split its matches on Saturday to close out the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawk Invitational at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center, beating Alabama State 3-0 (30-28, 25-20, 25-18) before Cal State Bakersfield beat the Lady Pirates 3-1 (25-22, 10-25, 25-22, 25-20).

The Lady Pirates (6-8) extended their winning streak to four matches with the win over Alabama State, before having it snapped by the Roadrunners.

Freshman Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) was named to the All-Tournament Team after totaling 41 killsa and 33 digs over all three matches. She had two double-doubles -- both on Saturday -- and hit .326 for the tournament.

The Hornets actually led for much of the first set in the morning's action, at one point leading by as much as five (17-12). But the Lady Pirates scored three straight points to cut that lead to 17-15 after a kill from Kraskura.

The score was tied seven times down the stretch, as Hampton kept scrapping its way back. An Alabama State error gave Hampton a 29-28 lead, before senior Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) gave the Lady Pirates the set with a kill.

Hampton jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second set after a kill from Kraskura, before Alabama State went on a 4-1 run to close to within 6-5. Kraskura gave the Lady Pirates a little more breathing room with a kill on the next rally. A kill from freshman Sonja Maksimovic (Belgrade, Serbia) put Hampton up 13-9, and Armstrong added an ace later in the set to put the Lady Pirates up 16-12.

Alabama State tried to rally several times in the second set, but Hampton held the Hornets at bay to win the second set 25-20.

After the Hornets tied the third set at 6-6, Hampton scored 11 unanswered points to take a 17-6 lead after senior Juliana Chavez (Bogota, Colombia) recorded a kill. The Lady Pirates reached 18 points before Alabama State reached double digits.

The Hornets went on a 5-0 run late in the set to cut Hampton's lead to 23-18, but the Lady Pirates held on for the victory.

Hampton hit .220 as a team, recording 46 kills and just 18 errors in 127 attacks. The Lady Pirates hit a team-best .304 in the first set, thanks to 17 kills and three errors in 46 attacks, while also hitting .255 (16 kill, four errors in 47 attacks) in the second set.

Hampton also held a 5-4 edge in service aces.

Alabama State hit .172 as a team with 34 kills and 14 errors in 116 attacks. The Hornets hit a team-best .302 (18 kills, five errors in 43 attacks).

Kraskura led the Lady Pirates with her third double-double of the season, recording a team-high 15 kills and 12 digs on defense. She hit .294 for the match, recording just five errors in 34 total attacks. Maksimovic had eight kills.

Chavez led Hampton with 36 of the team's 41 assists, while junior Brittany Hill (Sacramento, Calif.) had a team-high 14 digs. Armstrong, who also had seven kills, recorded 12 digs.

Maya Bell led Alabama State with 13 kills.

The Lady Pirates jumped to a 10-5 lead in the first set against Cal State Bakersfield in the afternoon match, before the Roadrunners went on a 4-0 run to cut that gap to 10-9. Chavez recorded a kill to extend the lead back to 11-9.

The score was tied eight times down the stretch in the first half, before Bakersfield seized control and took the first set 25-22.

Hampton dominated the second set from the opening serve, jumping out to a 12-1 lead after a kill from junior Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia). The Lady Pirates maintained a wide margin throughout the set, leading 15-5 after an Armstrong kill and 19-8 after she recorded an ace.

Chavez and junior Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) teamed on a block to put Hampton up 21-8.

Kraskura recorded a kill to close the set, giving Hampton a 25-10 win – the Lady Pirates' most lopsided set win since taking a set 25-11 from Coppin State on Oct. 10, 2010.

Hampton jumped to a 5-1 lead to open the third set, before Bakersfield went on a 5-1 run to tie the set at 6-6. Armstrong gave Hampton a 7-6 lead with a kill, before the Roadrunners forced another tie. In all, there were seven ties in the third set – including a 21-21 stalemate after an Armstrong kill.

Bakersfield closed the set with a 4-1 spurt, though, to take the advantage.

Hampton went up 3-1 early in the fourth set after a Kraskura kill before Bakersfield tied the set at 3-3. Maksimovic recorded a kill to put Hampton back up 4-3, but the Roadrunners scored the next four points to take a 7-4 lead.

Armstrong tied the set at 13-13 with a kill, before the Lady Pirates took a 15-13 lead following a 6-0 run. Bakersfield fought back, tying the set at 15-15 before taking a 16-15 lead, but Cadavid tied the set at 16-16 with a kill.

Bakersfield won the following point, though, and went on to take the set and the match.

Hampton hit .229 as a team, recording 50 kills and 20 errors in 131 total attacks. The Lady Pirates hit a team-best .333 in the second set, with 12 kills and just three errors in 27 attacks. The Lady Pirates also held a 5-3 edge in service aces.

The Roadrunners hit .257 as a team with 57 kills and 20 errors in 144 attacks – hitting a team-best .464 (15 kills, two errors in 28 attacks) in the third set and .326 (20 kills, five errors in 46 attacks) in the first set.

Kraksura recorded yet another double-double – her fourth of the season – with a team-high 19 kills and 11 digs on defense. She hit .400 for the match, recording just three errors in 40 attacks. Cadavid added 12 kills, hitting .375.

Chavez had 45 of Hampto's 50 assists.

Hill led the team with 18 digs on defense, while Chavez added 12 digs for her first double-double of the season.

Haleigh Haratyk led Bakersfield with 25 kills and 10 digs, while Saelina Dunn added 14 kills.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Tuesday, when they hold their home debut at Holland Hall against Coppin State at 6 p.m. It will be the first of four straight matches at Holland Hall for the Lady Pirates.
