HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will look to get back into the win column on Tuesday, as the Pirates square off against South Carolina State at the HU Convocation Center at 7 p.m.
The Pirates (6-13, 2-4 MEAC), in their third season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., lost their fourth straight game on Saturday, falling 80-75 to Norfolk State despite 18 points from senior guard
Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) and another 17 points from senior guard
Christopher Tolson (Laurel, Md.).

Mike Tuitt (Bronx, N.Y.) added 13 points in the loss.
The Bulldogs (4-15, 0-6 MEAC) lost their 13th straight game on Saturday, falling 83-53 at Savannah State. Freshman forward Luka Radovic led South Carolina State with 14 points, while tying the team high with nine rebounds along with senior forward/center Presano Bell. Junior guard Khalif Toombs added 10 points.
The Bulldogs went 10-22 overall last season, finishing eighth in the MEAC with a mark of 5-11. South Carolina State, under fifth-year head coach Tim Carter, returns three starters and five letterwinners from last year's squad, and the Bulldogs were picked to finish 10th in the MEAC this season.
Senior guard Brandon Riley leads the Bulldogs in scoring, averaging 16.0 points a game, while Toombs is pouring in 11.3 points a contest. Senior forward Omar Sanders is scoring 10.2 points a night to go along with a team-high 7.4 rebounds per contest.
The Bulldogs are scoring 64.1 points a game, while giving up 78.8 points a contest.
Since moving up to Div. I in 1995, the Pirates are 17-17 against South Carolina State, having won last season's meeting 64-53 at the HU Convocation Center. Prior to last season, the Bulldogs had won three straight against the Pirates. Dating back to the 2006-07 season, South Carolina State has won five of the last nine meetings. Hampton is 9-5 against the Bulldogs at home during its time as a Div. I program.
Hampton is 193-113 all-time as a Div. I program (since 1995) against teams currently in the MEAC, including an 11-5 mark in the conference last season. North Carolina Central, in its first year in the MEAC, is the only team currently in the conference that the Pirates have not faced since moving to Div. I.
Since joining the MEAC in 1995, the Pirates have won two regular-season conference titles (2000-01, 2001-02) and four MEAC Tournament crowns (2001, 2002, 2006, 2011).
The Pirates went 8-3 at the HU Convocation Center last season, despite losing their last two home games of the season. Starting with a 78-67 win over Towson on Dec. 20 of last season, the Pirates won seven straight home games – including five in a row against MEAC competition.
For his career as a head coach, Joyner is 17-10 at home, and the Pirates are 3-2 at home so far this season – beating William & Mary, High Point and Howard, before losing to Savannah State on Dec. 1 and Norfolk State on Saturday. Hampton is 1-2 at home in MEAC play this season.
