BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University volleyball team remained unbeaten in conference play on Sunday, beating Coppin State
3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-22) at the Physical Education Complex.
The Lady Pirates (11-10, 2-0) have won four of their last five matches – including the last three – and have won 10 of 11 meetings against Coppin State during head coach Pedro Gonzalez's tenure.
Hampton held a 9-6 lead in the first set, but the Lady Eagles scored five straight points to take an 11-9 lead. Sophomore
Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic) later tied the set at 12-12 with a kill, before Coppin State scored the next four points to go up 16-12.
The Lady Pirates then went on a 4-1 run to cut the Lady Eagles' lead to 17-16, but Coppin State (6-8, 2-1 MEAC) held on to win the set, thanks to a .270 hitting percentage (15 kills, five errors in 37 total attacks).
Hampton turned that around in the second set, hitting .345 thanks to 14 kills and just four errors in 29 attacks. Strakova gave the Lady Pirates a 9-3 lead in the second set with a kill, and junior
Petra Parros (Bloomfield, N.J.) added a kill later in the set to grow the lead to 13-7.
After Coppin State cut the lead to 13-9, the Lady Pirates scored four straight to go up 17-9 after back-to-back kills from senior
Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.).
Junior
Bibiany Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil) clinched the set with a kill to tie the match at 1-1.
That momentum carried into the third set, as the Lady Pirates took a 14-5 lead after Parros capped a 5-0 run with a kill. Parros and sophomore
Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) later teamed on a block to give the Lady Pirates a 16-6 lead.
Kraskura added a kill later in the set to put Hampton up 19-9. Coppin State closed to within 22-13 later in the set, but the Lady Pirates scored the last three points of the set, taking a 2-1 lead in the match after a Coppin State service error.
Strakova gave Hampton a 7-4 lead with a kill early in the fourth set, and she added another kill later to put the Lady Pirates up 11-7. Coppin State closed to within 13-11, but Hampton scored the next four points to go up 17-11 after a Kraskura kill.
Sophomore
Sonja Maksimovic (Belgrade, Serbia) recorded a kill to give the Lady Pirates a 23-18 lead, before the Lady Eagles scored the next three points to cut the lead to 23-21.
Strakova later clinched the set and the match with a kill.
Strakova led the Lady Pirates with 19 kills, hitting .275 for the match and recording a team-high three service aces. Kraskura added 12 kills and a team-high 15 digs on defense for her 10th double-double of the season.
Maksimovic added nine kills.
Fonseca had 44 of Hampton's 48 assists, and freshman
Samantha Sours (Yorktown, Va.) added 12 digs.
