LADY PIRATES BEAT DELAWARE STATE IN STRAIGHT SETS

DOVER, Del. – The Hampton University volleyball team upended Delaware State in straight sets on Sunday in Memorial Hall, winning 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-14).

The Lady Pirates (13-11, 4-1 MEAC) matched their win total from last season and have won six of their last eight matches. Delaware State (4-14, 1-5 MEAC) lost its fifth straight match.

The Lady Pirates jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first set following a service ace from sophomore Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic). Delaware State answered with four of the next five points to cut the lead to 9-8.

The Lady Hornets later tied the set at 11-11, before junior Bibiany Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil) gave Hampton the lead back with a kill.

Strakova and junior Petra Parros (Bloomfield, N.J.) teamed on a block to put Hampton up 16-14, before Delaware State tied the set at 16-16, then Hampton scored three straight points to go up 19-16. The Lady Hornets then closed the gap to 19-18, before Parros gave Hampton a 21-18 lead with a kill.

Delaware State wouldn't go away, though, scoring the next three points to tie the set at 21-21.

After the Lady Hornets tied the set at 22-22, Hampton scored the last three points before Fonseca clinched the set with a service ace to put Hampton up 1-0.

Parros gave Hampton a 5-2 lead to open the second set with a kill, before the Lady Pirates grew that lead to 7-2 on a Delaware State attack error. After Delaware State stopped that run, the Lady Pirates went up 9-3 after kills from Strakova and Fonseca.

The run grew to 6-0, with Hampton going up 13-3 after an ace from Strakova.

The Lady Pirates continued dominating the second set, scoring three straight points to go up 20-7 after a block from senior Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Fonseca. Hampton then scored five of the last seven points to take the second set 25-11 and go up a decisive 2-0 in the match.

The Lady Pirates hit .500 in the second set, with 15 kills and just one error in 28 attacks.

After Delaware State went up 7-5 in the third set, Hampton went on a 4-0 run to take a 9-7 lead. The run grew to 9-1, with the Lady Pirates going up 14-8 after a kill from sophomore Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia). Sophomore Marija Kocevska (SkopjeKarpos, Macedonia) had two service aces and a kill in that run.

In all, Hampton went on an 11-2 run after the Lady Hornets' 7-5 lead, going up 16-9 after a kill from Strakova.

After Delaware State closed the lead to 19-12, the Lady Pirates closed the set on a 6-2 run to take the third set 25-14 and win the match in straight sets. Hampton hit .455 for the third set, with 11 kills and just one error in 22 attacks.

For the match, Hampton hit .314 (39 kills, 12 errors in 86 attacks), while holding the Lady Hornets to just .139 hitting. The Lady Pirates also had 12 service aces to just three for Delaware State.

Strakova led the Lady Pirates with 11 kills, hitting .435 for the match (one error in 23 attacks). Kraskura had nine kills and a team-high eight digs, and Fonseca hit .571 with five kills and one error in seven attacks.

Fonseca also had all 31 of Hampton's assists.
