LADY PIRATES REBOUND WITH THREE-SET WIN OVER COPPIN STATE

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team got back into the win column on Friday night with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-18) win over conference rival Coppin State in Holland Hall.

The Lady Pirates (14-13, 5-3 MEAC) have now eclipsed last season's win total and have won the last four meetings and 11 of the last 12 against the Lady Eagles.

After Hampton jumped out to a 4-1 lead to open the first set, that lead grew to 10-4 after a kill from sophomore Sonja Maksimovic (Belgrade, Serbia). Junior Bibiany Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil) later added a kill of her own to put the Lady Pirates up 12-5.

Coppin State (9-11, 4-4 MEAC) answered with a 7-1 to close to within 13-12, before the Lady Pirates scored the next two points to once again open a gap at 15-12. Freshman Allysa Medina (Menifee, Calif.) later added a kill to put Hampton up 20-16.

The Lady Eagles closed the gap to 22-20, but Hampton scored three of the next four points, clinching the first set after senior Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.) and sophomore Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) teamed on a block.

The Lady Pirates hit .355 (15 kills, four errors in 31 attacks) in the first set.

Hampton bettered that in the second set, hitting a match-best .429 with 14 kills and just two errors in 28 total attacks. The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 4-1 lead after a kill from sophomore Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic), before Coppin State fought back to tie the set at 6-6.

The Lady Pirates answered with four unanswered points, taking a 10-6 lead. Coppin State later closed to within in 12-10, before Hampton went on a 7-1 run, taking command of the set with a 19-11 lead after a Kraskura kill.

After the Lady Eagles cut the lead to five, 20-15, Hampton closed the set with a 5-2 run, going up 2-0 in the match after Kraskura recorded a service ace.

Coppin State opened the third set with the first two points, before the Lady Pirates went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-2 lead. The Lady Eagles then closed to within 8-7 with a 6-2 burst, before a Hampton 4-0 spurt gave the Lady Pirates a 12-7 lead after a Strakova ace.

After Coppin State closed to within 12-9, Hampton went on a 7-2 run to take a 20-11 lead after a kill from sophomore Marija Kocevska (SkopjeKarpos, Macedonia)  The Lady Eagles closed to within six, 23-16, before the Lady Pirates clinched the set and picked up their fifth sweep of the season.

Hampton hit .258 (12 kills, four errors in 31 attacks) in the final set.

The Lady Pirates hit .344 for the match, their second-highest hitting percentage of the season, after recording 41 kills and a season-low-tying 10 errors in 90 total attacks. Hampton held Coppin State to just .129 hitting.

Hampton also held a 6-4 advantage in service aces.

Strakova had a team-high 13 kills, hitting .423 for the match, while Kraskura and Medina each added eight kills. Medina hit .375 for the match, recording just two errors in 16 total attacks.

Kocevska came off the bench to add five kills in eight attacks.

Fonseca had 30 of the Lady Pirates' 36 assists, while freshman Samantha Sours (Yorktown, Va.) had a team-high 10 digs on defense. Kraskura was one dig shy of a double-double, recording nine digs, and Strakova added seven digs.

Ariel Richard led Coppin State with 11 kills.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they take on Morgan State at 3 p.m. at Peninsula Catholic High School in Newport News, Va.
