LADY PIRATES SWEEP MORGAN STATE AGAIN

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team swept Morgan State for the second time this season on Saturday, winning 3-0 (26-24, 28-26, 25-21) at Peninsula Catholic High School.

The match had been moved and re-scheduled in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy.

The Lady Pirates (15-13, 6-3 MEAC) picked up just their fourth win all-time over the Lady Bears (4-19, 3-6 MEAC), on top of picking up the season sweep.

Morgan State led early in the first set, going up 7-5 before the Lady Pirates tied the set at 7-7 on a block from sophomore Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) and junior Petra Parros (Bloomfield, N.J.). After the Lady Bears took a 10-8 lead, Hampton scored three straight points, taking an 11-10 lead after a kill from senior Mariah Baylor (Minneapolis, Minn.).

Morgan State tied the set at 11-11, but the Lady Pirates then went on a 6-2 run to take a 17-13 lead after a kill from Parros. The Lady Bears answered with a 6-1 run to go up 19-18, but Hampton extended the lead yet again.

Baylor recorded a kill to put the Lady Pirates up 24-21 and force set point, but Morgan State scored three straight to tie the set at 24-24. Sophomore Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic) then registered back-to-back kills to give Hampton the first set 26-24.

Hampton hit .325 in the first set, with 18 kills and five errors in 40 attacks.

The Lady Pirates hit a match-best .364 (15 kills, three errors in 33 attacks) in the second set, though Morgan State opened the set with a 3-0 lead. Strakova gave the Lady Pirates their first lead of the set, 7-6, with a kill.

After Morgan State tied the set at 10-10, Hampton scored three straight points to go up 13-10 – and Strakova put the Lady Pirates up 14-11 with a kill. But the Lady Bears fought back, and the closing rallies of the set saw Morgan State lead 24-22 with a chance to tie the match.

But Parros, Fonseca, and Kraskura all teamed on a block to tie the set at 24-24, then freshman Allysa Medina (Menifee, Calif.) gave the Lady Pirates a 26-25 lead with a kill, before Morgan State tied the set at 26-26.

Kraskura and Strakova both registered kills to give Hampton the set 28-26 and take control of the match.

Hampton jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set, before Morgan State rallied to close the Lady Pirates' lead to 6-5. Kraskura later added a kill to put the Lady Pirates up 12-9, before a service ace from Strakova put Hampton up 15-11.

Morgan State battled back to tie the set at 17-17, then again at 18-18, before a 6-1 Hampton spurt put the Lady Pirates up 24-19 and force match point.  The Lady Bears scored the next two points to close the gap to 24-21, before Strakova clinched the match with a kill.

Hampton hit .280 for the match, recording 44 kills and just 14 errors in 107 total attacks, while holding the Lady Bears to just .186 hitting for the match. The Lady Pirates have held 14 of their opponents so far this season under a .200 hitting percentage.

The Lady Pirates also held a 7.5-5.0 advantage in blocks.

Kraskura and Strakova each had 15 kills for the Lady Pirates, and both players hit .343 for the match. Strakova also had three blocks for the match, while Kraskura and Strakova each had a service ace for the Lady Pirates.

Baylor led Hampton with four blocks.

Fonseca had 38 of Hampton's 42 assists, while freshman Samantha Sours (Yorktown, Va.) had a team-high 11 digs on defense.

Arianna Hayden led Morgan State with 11 kills.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 4, when they head to Washington, D.C. to take on rival Howard at 3 p.m. in Burr Gymnasium.
