PIRATES DROP TOUGH SEASON OPENER AT WILLIAM & MARY

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team dropped its 2012-13 season opener on the road Friday night, as William & Mary took a 69-51 win at Kaplan Arena thanks to a strong second half.

The Pirates (0-1) were outscored 40-29 in the second half, after being down by just seven at the break.

Freshman guard Ke'Ron Brown (Savannah, Ga. ) and junior Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y..) led the Pirates with 10 points each, while Maxwell also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Hampton shot just 31.7 percent (19-for-60) from the floor and made just two of 16 3-pointers. The Pirates did out-rebound the Tribe (1-0) 38-36, and Hampton only turned the ball over 12 times.

William & Mary shot 46.8 percent (22-for-47) from the floor – including a 48.0 percent clip in the second half.

The Pirates led 7-2 early on after Maxwell hit a jumper at the 17:27 mark, before William & Mary answered with an 11-2 run to take a 13-9 lead with 12:49 left in the first half after a pair of Marcus Thornton free throws.

Redshirt-freshman guard Reggie Price (Charlotte, N.C.) hit a 3-pointer with 8:38 left in the first half to put Hampton back on top 16-15, but the Tribe answered with five straight points to go up 21-16 at the 4:51 mark.

Brown cut the lead to 21-20 with 3:56 left in the half with a layup, but William & Mary scored seven unanswered points to go up 28-20 with 2:10 left in the half after a Thornton layup.

William & Mary led 29-22 at halftime.

The Pirates cut the gap to six points with 17:41 left in the second half, when Maxwell hit a jumper to make the score 32-26. But the Tribe answered with a 15-4 run, going up 47-30 at the 13:43 mark after a free throw from Terry Tarpey.

The Tribe's largest lead of the night came at the 9:59 mark, when William & Mary went up 57-32 after a Brandon Britt layup.

Hampton went on a 14-1 run to cut the lead to 58-46 with 5:13 left to play after a jumper from freshman guard Dwight Meikle (Jonesboro, Ga.)  but the Pirates only scored five points the rest of the way as the Tribe closed the game with 11 points to seal the win.

Thornton led three William & Mary players in double figures with 24 points.
