BUSY WEEK COMING FOR HAMPTON VOLLEYBALL

Weekly Notes

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University volleyball team will have five matches this week, including the team's 2012 home debut and a tournament over the weekend hosted by Stetson University.

The Lady Pirates (1-3) will play host to Radford on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Holland Hall. Then they will head to DeLand, Fla. on Friday and Saturday for the Stetson Clarion Classic, where they will take on Central Arkansas and Wofford on Friday, before squaring off against Florida Atlantic and Stetson on Saturday.

The Lady Pirates took one of their three matches this past weekend in the North Carolina Central Invitational, beating Elon in five sets on Friday in Durham, N.C. Sophomore Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) had three double-doubles in that tournament, earning All-Tournament Team honors.

She had a career-high 30 kills to go with 17 digs and six service aces against Elon, before adding 20 kills and 16 digs in a five-set loss to Winthrop on Friday. In Saturday's four-set loss to North Carolina Greensboro, Kraskura had 12 kills and 11 digs.

In those three matches, Kraskura hit .326.

The Lady Pirates also fell in straight sets to NCCU in a non-conference match this past Sunday, led by junior Ioana Kalfinova (Sofia, Bulgaria), who recorded 10 kills and hit .474 with just one error in 19 total attacks.

Hampton, which was picked to finish second in the MEAC Northern Division this season, is one of just five teams in the conference to have won a match in the season's first weekend.

Hampton is 0-3 all-time against Radford, with the last meeting between the two teams coming in 2008 — when the Highlanders won in straight sets. Head coach Pedro Gonzalez is 0-1 against Radford during his tenure.

The Lady Pirates are 0-7 against Wofford, losing the last meeting in straight sets in 2010. Wofford has won six of its seven meeting against Hampton in straight sets. Hampton is 1-0 against both Stetson and Florida Atlantic, having defeated both teams last season; the Lady Pirates beat Stetson in four sets, before beating Florida Atlantic in five.

Gonzalez is 0-4 against Wofford during his tenure at Hampton, while he's 1-0 against both Stetson and Florida Atlantic.

Hampton has never faced Central Arkansas.
