HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team showed its resiliency on Sunday afternoon, mounting multiple comebacks en route to a
3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-21) sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore in Holland Hall.
Hampton (11-8, 5-0 MEAC) has won three straight matches and six of its last seven. In five conference matches so far this season, the Lady Pirates have only lost one set.
It was Hampton's first sweep of UMES since 2005.
Junior rightside
Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic), the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, had a team-high 19 kills, while junior outside hitter
Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) added 14 kills and hit a team-best .480, thanks to just two errors in 25 attacks.
Sophomore outside hitter
Allysa Medina (Menifee, Calif.) added seven kills and hit .375, and she tied junior middle blocker
Marija Kocevska (SkopjeKarpos, Macedonia) for the team lead with three aces.
Senior setter
Bibiany Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil) had 40 of Hampton's 42 assists, and senior libero
Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) had a team-high 12 digs.
The Lady Pirates hit a match-best .423 in the first set, recording 16 kills and just five errors in 26 total attacks. UMES actually held an 8-7 lead early in that set, but the Lady Pirates took control by scoring the next six points – taking a 13-8 lead on a kill from Kocevska.
UMES closed the gap to 13-11, but Hampton went on a 9-3 run, taking a 22-14 lead on a Strakova kill. The Lady Hawks later cut the lead to 24-18, but a Kraskura kill gave the Lady Pirates the first set.
UMES led for much of the second set, and the Lady Hawks were up by as much as seven when they held a 21-14 lead. UMES later led 22-16, but the Lady Pirates stormed back, scoring six of the next seven points to cut the lead to 23-22.
The Lady Hawks scored the next point to force set point, up 24-22, before Strakova recorded two straight kills, UMES had an attack error, and Strakova added another kill to cap a 4-0 Hampton run and give the Lady Pirates the second set.
Hampton hit .368 (12 kills, five errors in 38 attacks) in the second set.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 5-3 lead to open the third set, but UMES scored the next six points to take a 9-5 lead. An ace from Medina cut that lead to 10-9, before the Lady Hawks went on a 6-1 run to take a 16-10 lead.
UMES later led 18-12, but the Lady Pirates mounted another comeback, scoring seven of the next nine points to cut the lead to 20-19 after a kill from senior middle blocker
Petra Parros (Bloomfield, N.J.). UMES scored the next point to take a 21-19 lead, but the Lady Pirates closed the third set – and the match – with a 6-0 run.
UMES hit just -.083 (five kills, seven errors in 24 attacks) in the third set.
The Lady Pirates hit .265 (45 kills, 19 errors in 98 attacks) for the match, while holding UMES (2-15, 1-4 MEAC) to just .094 hitting (25 kills, 17 errors in 85 attacks) – marking the third straight match in which a Hampton opponent hit less than .100.
Both teams had 4.0 blocks, while Hampton held an 8-6 edge in aces.
Moriah Brookins, Ashley Smith, and Diara Lewis each had a team-high five kills for the Lady Hawks.
