VOLLEYBALL TO CLOSE OUT HOMESTAND WITH TWO MATCHES

Weekly Notes

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University volleyball team will close out its three-match homestand this weekend in Holland Hall, taking on Delaware State at 6 p.m. on Friday and rival Norfolk State at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Sunday's match will be the Lady Pirates' Dig Pink match for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All fans attending are encouraged to wear pink on Sunday.

Survivors of breast cancer will be recognized before the match.

The Lady Pirates (11-8, 5-0 MEAC) have won three straight matches, and six of their last seven, after last Sunday's straight-set win over Maryland Eastern Shore. Dating back to last season, Hampton has won 10 straight conference matches.

In Hampton's five MEAC matches so far this season, the team has only dropped one set.

Heading into the weekend, junior rightside Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic) leads the nation in points (6.63 per set) and kills (5.73 per set). She is also ninth in the nation in aces, averaging a MEAC-best 0.52 per set.

She is also third in the conference with a .295 hitting percentage.

Junior middle blocker Marija Kocevska (SkopjeKarpos, Macedonia) is fourth in the MEAC, and 32nd in the nation, in aces with 0.42 per set.

Senior setter Bibiany Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil) leads the MEAC and is 65th in the nation in assists, averaging 10.49 per set. Heading into the weekend, Fonseca has 1,699 career assists at Hampton, fifth-most in program history.

As a team, Hampton leads the conference in hitting percentage (.241), kills (13.35 per set), assists (12.11 per set), and blocks (1.92 per set), and the Lady Pirates are second in aces (1.79 per set) and third in opponents' hitting percentage (.199).

In MEAC play, Hampton's opponents are hitting just .118. The Lady Pirates lead the conference in that category in conference play, as well as hitting percentage (.345), kills (13.88 per set), and assists (13.00 per set).

Delaware State (1-14, 0-5 MEAC) has lost 10 straight matches, while Norfolk State (7-13, 3-2 MEAC heading into Friday's action) has lost two of its last three matches, but the Spartans beat Delaware State this past Sunday.

Hampton is undefeated at home so far this season, going 4-0 on Holland Hall in 2013.

The Lady Pirates are 24-12 all-time against Delaware State and have won each of the last four meetings — including the last two in straight sets. Hampton is 58-17 all-time against Norfolk State — including a four-set win in Echols Hall earlier this season — though the Spartans have won nine of the last 12 meetings.
