HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team will resume Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action this weekend, with home match against Coppin State on Friday, followed by a match at rival Howard on Sunday.
Friday's match will tip off at 6 p.m. in Holland Hall, and Sunday's will be at 3 p.m. in Burr Gymnasium.
The Lady Pirates (8-8, 2-0 MEAC) had their three-match winning streak snapped at VCU on Wednesday night, but Hampton has won seven of their last eight matches against MEAC Northern Division opponents dating back to last season.
After this past weekend's action, junior rightside
Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic), the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, leads the nation in both points (6.67 per set) and kills (5.69 per set), while also ranking 11th in aces (0.55 per set).
She also leads the MEAC in those three categories, and her .282 hitting percentage is fourth-best in the conference.
Junior middle blocker
Marija Kocevska (SkopjeKarpos, Macedonia) is 35th in the nation – and third in the MEAC – in aces with 0.43 per set, and senior setter
Bibiany Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil) leads the MEAC with 10.26 per set.
She has 1,590 career assists at Hampton, six shy of fifth-most in program history.
As a team, the Lady Pirates lead the conference in hitting percentage (.229), kills (13.26 per set), and assists (11.98 per set) – and they rank 13th nationally in aces, 92nd in kills, and 93rd in hitting percentage.
Hampton is second in the conference in both blocks (1.92 per set) and aces (1.92 per set), and the Lady Pirates are third in the MEAC in opponents' hitting percentage (.212). Hampton is also fifth in the conference in digs, averaging 12.66 per set.
Coppin State (4-12, 1-1 MEAC) is currently fifth in the MEAC Northern Division and has lost five of its last six matches, while Howard (12-5, 1-0 MEAC) is second in the Northern Division and has won four of its last five outings.
So far this season, the Lady Pirates are 2-0 at home – with wins over William & Mary and Morgan State – and 2-5 on the road following Wednesday night's loss to VCU.
Hampton is 32-6 all-time against Coppin State and has won the last four meetings against the two schools. Howard leads the all-time series against the Lady Pirates 28-19, but Hampton has won each of the last nine meetings – including all three last season.
