HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team got back into the win column Friday evening in Holland Hall, sweeping conference foe Coppin State in straight sets
3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-16).
The Lady Pirates (9-8, 3-0 MEAC) have won four of their last five matches.
Junior rightside
Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic), the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, led the Lady Pirates with 16 kills, and she added 11 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. Junior outside hitter
Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) added eight kills and a team-high 13 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter
Allysa Medina (Menifee, Calif.) had six kills and just one error, hitting .455. Senior setter
Bibiany Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil), while recording 39 of Hampton's 43 assists, was a perfect 5-for-5 in attempts, hitting 1.000.
Senior libero
Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) had 10 digs.
Hampton opened the first set with a 5-1 run, taking that lead after back-to-back kills from Strakova. Coppin State closed the gap to 10-7, but the Lady Pirates answered with a 6-2 run to take a 16-9 lead on another Strakova kill.
Strakova later added another kill to give Hampton a 19-11 lead. Fonseca later added a kill of her own to put the Lady Pirates up 22-12; in all, Hampton ended the first set on a 9-2 run.
The Lady Pirates hit .438 (19 kills, five errors in 32 attacks), before hitting a match-best .448 (16 kills, three errors in 29 attacks) in the second set. Hampton's momentum from the end of the first set carried over, and by the time Ariel Richard recorded back-to-back errors, the Lady Pirates led 10-1.
Senior middle blocker
Petra Parros (Bloomfield, N.J.), who had seven kills on the night, recorded one of them to give the Lady Pirates a 15-3 lead in the second set. Coppin State answered with a 9-3 run, cutting the lead to 18-12, before later cutting the lead to 20-15.
Hampton held off the Lady Eagles, though, going up 2-0 in the match on a kill from Kraskura.
Coppin State fought early in the third set, which began with six ties and two lead changes, but after the Lady Eagles tied the set at 6-6, the Lady Pirates responded by scoring six of the next seven points to take a 12-7 lead on a kill from Kraskura.
Coppin State later cut Hampton's lead to 17-12, then the Lady Pirates scored three straight points to go up 20-12 before the Lady Eagles called timeout. Coppin State scored the next two points out of the break, but the Lady Pirates closed the set on a 5-2 run, clinching the match on an ace from Fonseca.
The Lady Eagles were held to -.065 hitting in the third set.
The Lady Pirates hit .416 (47 kills, 10 errors in 89 attacks) for the match, and Hampton held a 7.0-2.0 advantage on the block. Coppin State (4-13, 1-2 MEAC) hit just .083 for the night, recording 25 kills and 18 errors in 84 attacks. Coppin State is the second opponent Hampton has held below .100 hitting this season.
Nicole Malave led the lady Eagles with six kills.
