VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS PAST DELAWARE STATE

DOVER, Del. – The Hampton University volleyball team notched another straight-set win Friday evening in Memorial Hall, sweeping past Delaware State 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-17).

The Lady Pirates (15-10, 9-2 MEAC) have nine straight-set wins this season.

Junior rightside Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic) led the way with 19 kills and three aces, committing just two errors in 28 attacks to hit .607 for the match. Junior outside hitter Sonja Maksimovic (Belgrade, Serbia) added nine kills.

Maksimovic hit .529, going error-free in 17 attacks.

Senior setter Bibiany Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil) added 33 assists and six digs, while senior libero Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) had a team-high eight digs.

The Lady Pirates wasted no time in the first set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead after an ace from Pagan. Junior outside hitter Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) added an ace later in the set to give Hampton a 12-4 lead, and Maksimovic put the Lady Pirates up 14-6 with a kill.

Delaware State won the next point, before Hampton went on a 7-3 run to take a 21-10 lead after an ace from Strakova. The Lady Hornets scored three of the next four points, cutting the lead to 22-13 before the Lady Pirates scored the next three points to take the set 25-13 on a Maksimovic kill.

Hampton hit a match-best .609 (15 kills, one error in 23 attacks) in the first set.

Delaware State briefly rebounded, taking a 5-3 lead in the second set before the Lady Pirates went on a 5-1 run to take an 8-6 lead after a kill from senior middle blocker Petra Parros (Bloomfield, N.J.). Strakova later added a kill to put Hampton up 10-8.

The Lady Hornets fought back to tie the set at 12-12, before the Lady Pirates went on another 5-1 run to take a 17-13 lead after a kill from Fonseca. Delaware State answered with a 6-1 run to take a 19-18 lead.

Hampton then took a 21-19 lead after three straight points, before Delaware State fought back to tie the set at 21-21. The Lady Hornets also tied the set at 22-22, before Hampton scored three of the last four points, taking the set 25-23 on a Strakova kill.

Hampton hit .370 (12 kills, two errors in 27 attacks) in the second set.

The Lady Pirates followed that up with 13 kills and three errors in the third set, hitting .400. Hampton jumped out to a 7-1 lead to open that set, and another Strakova ace later in the set gave the Lady Pirates an 11-3 lead.

Strakova later gave the Lady Pirates a 14-7 lead with a kill, before Delaware State scored three straight points to cut the lead to 14-10. The Lady Pirates scored four of the next five points, taking an 18-11 lead on a Delaware State attack error.

A 5-2 run from the Lady Hornets cut Hampton's lead to 20-16, but the Lady Pirates closed the set – and the match – with a 5-1 run, clinching the 25-17 win on a kill from Maksimovic.

The Lady Pirates hit a season-best .453 (40 kills, six errors in 75 total attacks) and held a 10-4 edge in service aces. Hampton also held an 8.0-3.0 advantage in blocks.

Delaware State (2-21, 0-11 MEAC) hit just .165 for the match, becoming the 14th opponent this season Hampton has held to a sub-.200 hitting percentage.

Jessica Croucher led the Lady Hornets with 13 kills.
