PIRATES TO TAKE ON JMU IN GOVERNOR’S CLASSIC

Game Notes

RICHMOND, Va. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will look to get back into the win column on Saturday, squaring off against James Madison at 3 p.m. in the Richmond Coliseum to kick off the 2013 Governor's Holiday Hoops Classic.

The game will be televised live on the NBC Sports Network.

The Governor's Classic is an event coordinated by outgoing Virginia governor Bob McDonnell designed to raise awareness and funds for the various FoodBanks throughout the Commonwealth. Hampton and James Madison are the first game, with VCU and Virginia Tech playing in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Pirates (5-6) had their three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday, falling 69-67 at Northern Kentucky in overtime. Sophomore guard Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) led the Pirates with 16 points and five assists, while senior forward Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.) added 14 points, six rebounds, and six blocks.

Sophomore forward Jervon Pressley (Charlotte, N.C.) came off the bench to add seven points and a team-high nine rebounds in his Hampton debut.

James Madison (3-9) has lost seven of its last eight games after falling 78-65 to UNC Greensboro on Wednesday. The Dukes, who are in their fifth season under head coach Matt Brady, are the defending CAA champions and they were picked to finish seventh in the league this season.

Sophomore guard Andre Nation was a Preseason Second Team All-CAA selection, though sophomore guard Charles Cooke leads three Dukes in double figures with 15.4 points per game. Sophomore guard Ron Curry is averaging 11.9 points per night, and forward Andrey Semenov is pouring in 11.3 points a contest. Sophomore forward Taylor Bessick is averaging a team-best 5.0 rebounds per game.

Hampton is 1-3 against James Madison, but that win came last season, when the Pirates defeated the Dukes 69-65 in the HU Convocation Center. JMU won the first three meetings between the two teams, including an 88-86 neutral-court defeat during the 1995-96 season. This will be the second neutral-court meeting between the two teams.

Hampton is 10-22 against teams currently in the CAA since joining the Div. I ranks in 1995, including a 1-1 mark this season, with a win over William & Mary and a loss to Delaware in the early part of the 2013-14 season.

Overall, the Pirates are 0-1 against College of Charleston; 1-5 against Delaware; 1-3 against James Madison; 1-2 against Towson; 0-1 against UNC Wilmington; and 7-10 against William & Mary.

The Pirates have never faced Drexel, Hofstra, or Northeastern.

The Pirates went 0-1 on neutral courts last season – a 56-51 loss to Wofford in Wilmington, N.C. – and under head coach Edward Joyner, Jr., Hampton is 16-9 on neutral courts, including an 8-1 mark in 2010-11 (when the Pirates won 24 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament).

So far this season, the Pirates are 1-1 on neutral courts after splitting a pair of games in the Corpus Christi Challenge in Corpus Christi, Texas.
